    I as usual , did not read the whole OP . I don't buy into this knackered VCU mantra . I reckon knackered Universal Joints (UJ) might cause some problems ,that get diagnosed as shagged vcu .

    The handbrake light : is there a switch at the bottom of the lever ? I can't remember if there is on mine . Have you peeled back the gear stick gaiter and checked the condition of the yellow HDC wire and the connection ?
