    oil and filter change

On my L-series I have cut away the smallest portion of the undertray to get at the filter but if you cut too much away it does leave the filter can exposed and vulnerable if you are a regular off roader. To drain the oil I simply undo the two 10mm bolts at the back of the undertray pull it down...

Sorry lads. Another TD4 clutch change

Actually IRD doesn't have to come off, it's just easier if you resign yourself to taking it off from the beginning! I changed my clutch and left the IRD wedged in place because I thought it would be easier. Apart from anything else it makes removing/replacing the elusive g/box bolt much easier...

    Clutch change in freelander diesel

Hi Langer still not sure if your hippo is a Freelander 2 or just a freelander. I recently changed the clutch and operating system on my hippo (2000my Xedi) entirely on my own. I can't say that it was a difficult job, just tedious and it's easier if there are two of you or if you are a bit...

    Poly bush rear diff mounts

Anybody tried poly bush diff mounts. There is a guy on e-bay selling poly bushes which you have to fit into your existing bush mountings. Not sure how difficult it is to press out the old 'uns if you haven't got a press. One of my diff mounts has failed after 3000 miles. It must have been a...

What tyres do you have on your freelander

Michelin Latitude Cross. They were brilliant in the snow. I stuck with Michelins after using synchrones renewed 2 at a time on the back. I tossed out the last two with 2mm of tread after 52000 miles!

    drum paint help

Yep! they go rusty inside as well you know. Just have to remember to run the abrasive wheel round the friction surface inside the drum to deglaze and remove the paint. Having used hammerite of all types on rear drums, I can tell you it ain't even nearly heat proof. It always burns off on the...

    drum paint help

I have tried many different finishes on my rear drums but they always go rusty in the end. This summer I grit blasted the drums and painted then inside and out with VHT paint. Rust has just started to come through again. I have used Hammerite on the drums but it burns off around the...

How do I get the gearbox off?

Thanks for that, I will go searching for it. I wonder when it is such a crucial bolt why all the "official" bodies avoid mentioning it. Perhaps its a secret known only to main dealers! Thanks for your advice re removing IRD. I thought I would try and remove the box first and then if I can't mate...

Hi Stefan I've just read your post on a clutch change. I'm struggling with the job and can't find the IRD bolt you mention. I know that your clutch change was probly some time ago but I thought you may be able to describe the exact location of this bolt. Thanks Happyhippo.

How do I get the gearbox off?

thanks, but yes I removed the top two IRD bolts. Its the elusive 5th bolt I can't find. Ive seen two people mention it on this forum but is not shown on Rave or Haynes. Tomorrow I will have a go at removing the IRD, or at least disconnecting it from the g/box.

How do I get the gearbox off?

I need some help from the experts. I've just spent a fruitless day trying to remove the gearbox from my 2000 XeDi. I need to renew the clutch because the peddle hit the floor and stayed there. Hippo has done 130k miles but the clutch was fine. I found that the release shaft in the bell housing...

TD4 Decat possible solution L series????

I have an L-series engine and had fitted a new stainless exhaust without the cat. I just have the rear box. The exhaust note is quite sporty but not unpleasantly loud and the turbo spools up more quickly so the throttle response is better. It isn't an issue for MOT tests in the UK.

    Model clarification and tuning

I think 160HP is a bit optimistic. Even if it isn't, you wont be wanting power, you want torques. Had my hippo chipped and estimate it is now 120hp and 200Nm. Hippo is transformed with much more torque at low revs and quite a bit more power. Fuel consumption at constant throttle is about the...

    Freelander 2.0l xdi dipstick problem

It is not a difficult job. I can't remember now exactly what I did but I do remember that it was easy enough. The dipsick tube is a push fit in the engine block and IIRC is held in place by a bolt. Trouble is it was a while ago now and I can't remember if I took the radiator out to gain access...

Anyone know of a verg good NON main dealer for repairs?

check this link. Goodyer 4x4 not far from the M25 on the west side. Not particularly cheap but then would you expect them to be? Always had good results on several hippos. Not sure of Freelander 2 but worth a call. i even got a free courtesy car!:)

TD4 2002 battery charging in vehicle

I'd sooner trickle charge the battery in the vehicle than jump start it which has been known to fry your ECU. You shouldn't have a problem provided that you observe the correct polarity and charge on a low setting. When changing the battery you can maintain radio codes by providing 12 volts...

    Imminent IRD failure?

Hippo thanks for posting that. Its pretty much what I expected and confirms that I did fit mine the right way round. The purpose, I assumed was to fling off any mud or crap before it got into the bearing. I found the bearings very difficult to shift off the VCU and wish I had just given the...
