Series 3 WTF is wrong with starting this thing?

It's doing it on a hit-and-miss basis. It'll work a couple of times, then need a tap to jolt it into action. It's diesel JM - solenoid on the side of the motor. The short link cable between the two has a copious amount of tape around it. Maybe it's been bodged and replacing it might help. I'm...

Series 3 WTF is wrong with starting this thing?

Here's the thing. I had a few minutes earlier, so I ran up to the truck, pulled the bonnet, stuck a lump of wood down onto the motor and gave that a couple of firm knocks with a hammer... the stater motor turned over and it started. What do we make of that?

Series 3 WTF is wrong with starting this thing?

Thanks guys. I stuck a multimeter on the battery this morning as I was driving past where I left it. 12.62v. So, probably, ok there - just wanted to be sure. I'll find some time today to check the leads. Edit: I'm not sure I want to take the motor apart myself. As you can probably see from my...

True. Good thinking. I'll get the wire looked at asap and see how we fare. Cheers once again

Series 3 WTF is wrong with starting this thing?

That is what I'm hoping for James. I'm sure fact that it's a bit of an oil-bath down there doesn't help either. So, if that's the smoking problem, I still have an issue with the battery dropping power suddenly like that. The charge warning light has never lit up, and I know it works as far as...

Series 3 Quick brake shoe question

Yeah, I think it's just cheap parts being a little big, or off-set, or something. I'm going to have them all off and swapped around a bit. Maybe swap the drums around first to see what happens.

Series 3 WTF is wrong with starting this thing?

So, a few weeks ago I had the same problem I have now. I changed the battery and it all went away... until this morning. It started as usual, on the thrid attempt, this morning at 7:00. It was very cold overnight and so I was happy it started so easily. I drove 5 miles. Parked up for an hour...

Series 3 Quick brake shoe question

I've had a mate look at it and he can't see anything wrong. He's come to the same conclusion as below... thanks though. I've ignored it for a few days and today noticed that they are not getting hot at all. Maybe they were a bit wide and I've "run them in", or maybe I've warped the drum into...

Series 3 Quick brake shoe question

I'm gonna take them all off and swap them around once I've measured them, although I'm pretty certain they're all the same sizes. @tottot No, they've not been modified at all; just one leading and one trailing shoe, and one snail

Series 3 Quick brake shoe question

The problem is that I fitted new shoes all-round. Some came labelled as front, and others back, but they all looked the same so I fitted them willy-nilly. I've got a problem now with one on the front. When I put the drum back on it seems fine until I tighten it on with the screws. Then it locks...

Series 3 Quick brake shoe question

A quick question about the width of brake shoes... Both front and back drums are 10 inch diameter but are the shoes, therefor drums, wider at the back? Or will any set of shoes fit anywhere?

Lovely looking truck. What rims and tyres are on that?

    Series 1 Bargain!

£1000 would easily buy you my 1978 swb s3 Santana at this very moment. However, give me a week to get the glow plugs and the wheel bearings done, then it's not for sale.

Santana Trophy 2016, and so on...

I'm not sure if any of you guys already know about the existence of this "competition". It's only in its infancy, but looks like it's growing in popularity. Well, here's a link - http://www.santanatrophy.com/#!english/cucr Not all Land Rover models are permitted, but worth looking at anyway...

Series 3 Just bought this, and may need some advice in the near future

I'll come clean. I haven't had the opportunity to do what I said I was going to do in the above post. I chucked a bit of ep90 in there because I was a bit worried about the wheel bearings not getting any lubrication. However, I noticed today that, after only a few miles, the front left wheel...

Series 3 Just bought this, and may need some advice in the near future

Cheers @Blackburn. I think I'm going to try a bit of both. I'll top them up with ep90 (or the 80/90 I've got kicking around) because it can't really do any harm I suppose and give it a run, maybe with the brakes adjusted up a notch, for a bit of extra warmth in the general area, and if it...

Good advice, thanks. I'll do just that with one of the sides (see below), and let you know how it goes. Cheers LR Good advice, thanks. I'll do just that with the other side and make you drink the result with an orujo chaser next time you're in Lugo ;)

Series 3 Just bought this, and may need some advice in the near future

Cheers LR. It's definitely not one shot grease; it's an orangy-brown colour, like any standard grease. It's not in the least bit runny, even when warm after a run. I think I'd have to light a fire under it to get it out hehe It might come down to taking the whole bloody assembly to pieces to...

Series 3 Are these glow plugs too cheap?

A deal. You're a gentleman. I'll message you my address, and start practicing the orujo drinking - Lugo isn't that far away, but it sounds like I'd have to get a mate to drive me back hehe (6 foot blonde eh? Interesting... )
