    Galv dipping my chassis (Manchester)

Here http://www.wedge-galv.co.uk/plant-locator/manchester-galvanizing-ltd/ they will do the galv part , I used same firm (Birmingham) to do my 90 bulkhead etc . Best get someone to repair and blast it and then get it to the galv people before it goes rusty

Just called up for a quote on galvanising a bulkhead...

decent gal firms should do the job without warping , my 90 one didnt. and I did the welding repair needed prior , if you go about the welding in the proper manner you should not cause warping either . The worst job after is clearing the flap hinge tubes. Yes remove the mesh grills.

let's talk wheels & tyres (non monster truck...)

I was tyre dealer for 15 years , and landrover operator for best part of half a century , The ribs on inside of tyre wont bother tubes a bit. The thing that gives most punctures with tubes in tubeless tyres is the QC labels , they dont matter when no tube , for which they are intended , but if...

Series 3 2.6 six pot rebuild!

The sixes are quite a good engine , but got a bit of a rep mainly due to buyers thinking they could neglect the six like they did the 4 cylinders , main point is dont neglect the ex valve clearance adjustment , do at correct intervals otherwise they burn valves very quick. From experience the...

    Help and advice needed

D2 as defender would be culture shock after freelanders and Cayenne . D2/3/4 will go more offroad than your cayenne without any mods just a decent set of tyres , will do the towing far better than the Freelander. JMHO

    Daytime running lights

Why bother with sidelights ? in murky conditions the outline is visible before sidelights are . so use them as parking lights , and if any lighting is needed at all put on dipped headlights Simples :) These DRLs and auto lights function means more and more clueless wonders are driving around...

Not really unless you need to do a complete rebuild anyway , or if you are buying a relatively recent (expensive) model and keep it for a long period.

    replacement engines

The BMW 3 ltr turbo diesel , apart from welding eng mount brackets to chassis , all parts are standard landrover or BMW . The ECU can be sorted by replacing with a stand alone unit , or an adapter harness purchased which allows the existing (BMW) ecu and imobiliser etc to be retained.

Series 2A Fire engine with rear coils and leafs

The only fire appliance seen fitted with supplementary coils was in OZ on a bushfire landcrsr , which was a farmers bodge . In UK series were usually fitted with HD springs and Aeon rubber spring assisters in fire engine application . Even the tacr1 was not fitted as you describe and was based...

Snow chains at the flick of a switch

They may not be allowed , as chains would chop up the surface of the ice road ?
  18. tacr2man

Snow chains at the flick of a switch

The wear rate is pretty low as the chain drive ratio speed is low in relation to tyre and road speed , ie the chain is deployed so that the tyre and road surface is almost stationary in relation to the chain :) They are available in the USA as Instachain , and have been about for quite a few...
