2004 Disco II - Needs Engine Rebuild - I could use some help

I didnt have to touch my cross member when I removed my engine. If you buy/hire an engine crane get a 2 tonne one, it has the reach you will need, I just about did mine single handed with a 1 tonne crane but it was a PITA! You are not that far from me, Im away for the next couple of weeks but...

2004 Disco II - Needs Engine Rebuild - I could use some help

Shame, thats a really nice looking D2, like the colour too! Having done a full rebuild I can say that its not really economic, unless you plan to keep the vehicle. Have you thought about just fitting a complete replacement engine? A few threads on here about that. Mark

Disco 2 Sad day for disco

Not surprised if its a Cat D. Seen many on Copart with similar damage. You could buy it back from the insurance co, fix it and either sell it or keep it. (if you have space or storage) I use a 20 ft shipping container as my workshop. Cat D doesn't have much/any effect on re-insurance cost. Mark

Td5 fuel filter / pump and veg oil

Agree, I only do it after Ive been sitting in traffic for more than 5 or so mins. I always allow it to cool down for a few mins after motorway driving, then turn off.

Td5 fuel filter / pump and veg oil

Mine does have a couple of advantages over a "normal" D2 Its a commercial, so its lighter, no back seats. No A/C, no ACE, no (pointless!) roof rails. No EGR, well its there but disabled. I also forgot to say before, that he was also advised not to let the car coast, i.e. when slowing down...

Td5 fuel filter / pump and veg oil

Firstly its only over a few 100 miles (sorry miss typed 1000 before) but Ive gone from 30 ave to 32 ave. Mixed driving but more short journeys than usual. All I do is what my friend who did the course told me, keep the throttle pedal position steady (dont mash it all the way down) let the revs...

Td5 fuel filter / pump and veg oil

Not always low revs. A couple of people I know have done economy driving courses. With a diesel it can be more economical to let the engine work up to revs that you may think are a bit high then change up. It can be better than changing up early and letting the engine "labour". Ive been trying...

The end of the diesel engine?

That a very impressive figure! Ive talked to a few truck drivers, most seem to ave 6-7 mpg! Smiths did make some large electric trucks but despite some high profile users, they never really took off. I guess the big issue is weight, a bit like aircraft, the more static weight, the less load...

    Cam timing

No just the cam cover to lock the camshaft. The flywheel locks with a pin through a threaded hole. Have a look under the car you should find it quite easily.

    Disco 2 Wheel bearing

Hubs can be pretty cheap, depends on your budget. Use genuine LR hub nuts, they are the correct size to allow you to tighten them up by re-fitting the wheel, lowering the car then passing a socket through the centre of the wheel. I re-used my original hub nuts, just have to be careful to stake...

Disco 2 What to look for on a TD5 viewing this weekend?

Try to let it sit idling for 10 mins or so. If it stalls its prob the injector seals, no biggy. If the MOT history checked out ok it sounds like its been looked after. D2 prices are pretty low now so there are bargains to be had.

    Disco 2 TD5

Double check the tightness of your alternator cables. I had exactly the same thing last year. Thought the battery had expired, jumped to buy a new one, fitted it, ran flat in 10 mins driving. Had a proper look at the cables on the alternator, one had come off and was just touching the post it...

Thats exactly what I did with my TD5 rebuild. Its sometimes useful to have a paper copy to write on, you can use it as a check list and when a particular stage is done, put a big line across it. Rave is nicely laid out, far better than Haynes manuals, IMO! Only slightly annoying thing is that it...

Freelander 1 Some help with a TD4 I viewed today...

Just did the same MOT check, lots of previous fails/advisories! And yes Im pretty sure a dealer has to give a warranty. Normally a dealer who wants to off a PX just puts it into a local auction. But Im certainly no expert.

Freelander 1 Some help with a TD4 I viewed today...

If they are selling it as "Spares or Repair" i.e no warranty no returns then it should be a lot cheaper! Wouldnt bother, silly if they wont let you drive it, it has an MOT!

I did download rave, but had trouble extracting the files. I found it easier to find the manuals in .pdf format, download them and then put them on my iPad/Surface.
