    ZF 4HP24 into a diesel p38

James, the main man said overheating is one of the main causes of warranty claims. That and wrong assembly when the pump is damaged by the torque converter. They see the evidence when the gearbox is "cooked". 300 deg F and your gearbox is history.

    ebay!!!!!

£200 for a recon? Sounds very cheap. Usually a lot more. Emmotts will presumably give a warranty.

    ZF 4HP24 into a diesel p38

James, maybe I should re phrase that. Of the p38 gearboxes Ashcrofts see, the majority are diesel boxes.

OK James. Thought you were saying I had made a bad move. Ashcrofts also said they see more p38 diesel box failures.

    ZF 4HP24 into a diesel p38

Overheating gearboxes is the biggest cause of failure according to Ashcrofts and slippage is the cause of heat. That is why I have fitted a thermocouple at their recommendation. Torque is still less than the 4.6 even with my chipped diesel. James, ask me in 10 years how is my gearbox doing.:)

    ZF 4HP24 into a diesel p38

We are talking about the HP24 gearbox here, as used in the 4.6 V8 and also the V12 BMW. The puny 2.5 diesel won't generate anything like as much strain. I have faith in Ashcroft Transmissions knowing what they are doing.

Early days yet. Don't know about mpg figures, but yes in theory less slip = less heat = greater efficiency = more mpg

    ZF 4HP24 into a diesel p38

Yes. There is less slip. The change points for the intermediate gears are definitely lower. Not so sure yet about the lock up in top. At gentle throttle openings it locks up at about 45mph but at higher throttle openings it is about 50mph. When I floor it and use kickdown, it is as late as...

It is different for everyone. Go to a L/R dealer with your VIN no.

    ZF 4HP24 into a diesel p38

I have replaced the ZF 4HP22 gearbox on my diesel p38 with the stronger 4HP24 as used on the 4.6 V8. A few people have asked about the details involved so here are a few notes: Background: I have got a chipped 2000 DSE. It has a Jeremy Fearne V2 chip and a larger Allisport intercooler /...

Fitted a HP24 gearbox and uprated torque converter into my diesel.

2.5 DSE - Cracked head without overheating ?

I have found from personal experience that every single component in the cooling system needs to be working correctly otherwise the diesel will overheat. Particularly if it is chipped. There is no spare capacity. I replaced the thermostat and water pump to start with. It improved but still ran...

    Opening Inspection Hatches

Forget the hatch. One trick to get the pipe in is to use a pencil sharpener to put a slight chamfer on the end. Also use a bit of dishwashing liquid a lubricant. Should be two O rings remember.

Onboard computer: can you adjust it?

I tow a heavy caravan. It is about 1.7 tonnes and with all my gear it is probably 2 tonnes. With my DSE I get about 21 - 22 mpg overall Running the aircon makes a difference. With it on 19.5 - 20.5 mpg. Solo I get about 26 mpg overall.

    Opening Inspection Hatches

I found it very awkward pushing the 6mm plastic pipes into the top of the air bags on the rear. I remember one side was worse than the other. To make it easier I fitted short sections of tube, a couple of inches long, to the rear bags first before I fitted them. I then used straight connectors...
