    Series 3 Tickover

Sounds a bit tappety but nothing serious. Mine does the same - if you run it for few seconds and then stop then restart mine goes away suggesting oil pump either gunged up or worn. As I do so few miles in it I’ll leave it until it’s warmer to drop the sump. Try checking tappet clearances first

    Defender 200tdi turbo heat shield

Update. Funk Motorsport turbo blanket arrived Saturday and only took a few minutes to fit. Attaching springs to hold it in place a bit fiddly but a piece of wire with a hook on the end helped! Took a 45 mile drive into N Wales and back y'day )on the N Wales Express Way so non-stop at 70 mph)...

    Defender 200tdi turbo heat shield

If anyones interested I’ve got a turbo blanket on order from company called Funk Motorsport. Sent them photos of the turbo& they’ve recommended their T25 internal waste gate blanket. Not the cheapest but hopefully built to last ! Also ordered some thermal insulation for the short section of pipe...

    Defender 200tdi turbo heat shield

surely a steel plate attached to underside of bonnet will just get hot and cause the same problem ? I can easily get some aluminium sheet to attach just above the turbo but would worry it would act as a heat sink and get hot enough to start another fire

    Defender 200tdi turbo heat shield

You don’t happen to have the size of the turbo blanket you’ve used do you? Mines got standard turbo fitted to 200tdi but can’t reconcile the Garrett numbers with any Z sizes for turbo blankets.

    Defender 200tdi turbo heat shield

As with many others with a Defender of this vintage my original heat shield fell apart years ago and I’ve run without one with no problems. Until last Saturday! A long high speed (speed relative in a Defender ) to Anglesey & back was accompanied by a burning smell. When I checked under the...

Check the seals! I had problem last year with my series 3 lightweight. Fitted new old stock slave & master cylinders with no joy. Turns out the new master cylinder seals had perished

    Instrument bulb sockets

It’s the white bit shown on here that’s broken. I think it’s integral with the instrument and they snap off

    Instrument bulb sockets

A lot of the white plastic tubes, that the instrument illumination bulbs push into, are broken on my 92 Defender. They become brittle with age & break easily. I’ve got several where the bulbs are just tape in place! Does anyone know if these can be bought separately as they seem to be an...

LED replacement bulbs for interior lights

Did mine a couple of years ago along with the reversing light. Much brighter. Replaced all the dash bulbs with green LED ones as well.

    Indicators. Bad earth?

Here’s the nightmare behind the dash. After disconnecting everything I could & pulling all the lights out I found the problem - hopefully! A previous owner has put all the rear light connections into junction boxes under the rear wheel arches. Again a mixture of domestic 3 core cable &...

    Indicators. Bad earth?

My series 3 Lightweight has the usual nightmare wiring typical of a vehicle that’s nearly 50 yrs old as successive owners have added their own bit of spaghetti. Behind the dashboard is a mess of domestic 3 core cable & scotchlok connectors. I’m rewiring it next year with a new wiring loom from...

    Canvas supplier?

Undercover Covers are the way to go. Quality far superior to Exmoor trim. I had issues with a tilt on my lightweight that rotted after 3 years. The replacement seats I bought off them for my Defender are basically crap. Poorly made & very thin vinyl material.

Nice to see it appears to have military light fittings. The headlight bezzles are on the wrong way round though.

    Oil change conundrum

This happened to me last time I did an oil change. There is an olive on bottom of dipstick tube that ensures it’s held in right place. This comes loose and allows dipstick tube to drop lower into block. I bought a new tube but haven’t got round to fitting it yet as I made a temporary fix by...

    Recommendations for new clutch

I’m thinking of upgrading my 92’ 200tdi Defenders transfer box with an exchange 1:2 ratio unit from Ashcroft as most of the mileage I’m now doing involves a 140 mile round trip to Anglesey! The old ones leaking badly so needs taking out to look at anyway. At the same time I’ll change the clutch...

Advice needed for a complete Land Rover newbie - Range Rover vs Range Rover Sport

I’ve had a few discoveries and RR over the years. My current RR is a 2014 4.4 vogue SE. I’ve had it for 4 yrs and now only do minimal mileage in it. As a load lugger it carries more than my 110 Defender but I certainly wouldn’t carry half the crappy dirty stuff I use the Defender for. Running...
