    Fuel Octane

True, plus the higher octane isn't saving fuel as the oil companies are keen to state, since older cars don't have knock sensors. As I said, the old bat (that is a euphemism by the way, I mean it in a nice way, as in very fast!) is running great on 99 so that's what she'll get.

    Fuel Octane

Since I bought my 1990 Range Rover Classic 3.9 EFI Estate I've been filling it with Esso Supreme-99 Octane fuel, but is it actually mandatory to do that, or is Regular-95 fine? It runs great with Supreme and has plenty o' power so I'll probably keep filling with that, but I'd be interested to...

    Tachometer Not Functioning

Well looks like we got a tach again! God knows how but since I disconnected the battery and reconnected it the tach has started working great. If she wants to fix herself, I ain't going to complain. Maybe she'll change her own oil too....

    Battery Life

Nah I'll go to the car part warehouse, where I go to get parts for the occasional car we get in at the lot which needs a bit of TLC.

    Battery Life

Well after posting that I took the battery out, put it on charge until it was 100%, and left it. Today I connected it up and low and behold it was sluggish again. Must be a bad battery. I'll get another one soon. I hate it when that happens. Can't they make things right these days!??

    Battery Life

In my 1990 RRC Vogue I have a brand new Varta battery fitted and it starts nice and quickly under normal day to day driving conditions, but if I leave the RR for more than a few days parked up it is sluggish to start. It never fails to start, but acts like the battery is old, which it is not...

    Wax

I admire your concern for the UK's water, but can't say I've ever really done anything to conserve water. I obviously turn the tap off when I'm not needing the water, but I do take my time when washing the car, patio etc...

"I have a jet washer but don’t use it often due to the amount of water it uses." Do you have a water meter then ? I'm on fixed rate so it doesn't matter for me.

    Wont turn over @@@@

I don't want to insult you, but did you check the battery has charge ? If it has been disconnected for a while it could have a dead cell, or simply be a bit flat.

My wife would agree with you there. She has a 2001 Land Rover Freelander 2L Diesel but only drives it about 1,000 miles a year (I don't know why we don't just sell it) as she doesn't like it. I suppose it is a back up if her Rover ever dies, but still. Actually, I think I'll wait until she...

    Wax

I've never heard of Swissol, but have heard of, and used Zymol. I used their Creame Wax, which is about 50 Quid a pop, cheaper than what I currently use, but I didn't find it left such a good finish.

Hehe, I always used to say that about my old Vauxhall Velox. That damned thing had more rust than paint. Luckily the car that motivated me to start this thread (wife's 1991 Rover 827 SLi) is in pristine condition so I can wash away 'till my heart is content.

    odd vibration at speed.

Could be that, I've seen it before. Could also be control arms amongst other things, I've seen that a lot too. It is hard to be too specific though without actually seeing the vehicle. I couldn't count the amount of times I had somebody phone my garage asking what it was over the phone. If...

    Wax

Yes, I see your point. The good thing with expensive wax though, is it normally pays off in the long run. For example, the local car valet who I use often started out using cheap Car Pride wax, which didn't leave the finish I was hoping for, so I recommended he used a more expensive one, but...

You can still wash it with a bucket, yes, but I would rather have a dirty car to be honest. I remember back in the 60s when I had my first car (a 1949 Vauxhall Velox) I used to wash it using a rag and an old rusty bucket. I couldn't afford any car shampoo, so I just used washing up liquid...

    Tachometer Not Functioning

I've just noticed in my wad of receipts the previous owner gave me there is one for a new alternator, so I expect that is the reason. I'm not all that bothered to be honest. If the alternator is one which won't accept a tachometer then I'll just leave it.

I tried that once, but my wife prefers "shiny" paint. God knows why... hehe

    Tachometer Not Functioning

No, not the trip meter. I should probably have used the more common name of "rev counter", it's just that I was in the motor trade for years and used the technical name - tachometer.

I'm good at waxing, well, that's what my wife says... This afternoon I took advantage of the wife being home all day and gave her 1991 Rover 827 SLi a thorough wash and wax. The wash I used was Turtle Wax (I gave it a jet rinse, one wash, then another rinse, another wash, and a final thorough...

    Tachometer Not Functioning

Since buying my 1990 RRC Vogue I've got everything working perfectly, except the tachometer, which has never worked. Is it just as simple as removing the cluster and resoldering a wire or is it a deeper problem ?
