    DIY VCU service

In Norway at least one owner does it :cool2: Does it work? Yes. In this country we have real winters so I think I would have noticed if it didn't.

    DIY VCU service

With grease nipples it is easy to adjust the fluid amount. A few extra strokes with the gun makes the VCU stiffer. If it becomes to stiff, just press the ball valve with a thin crosshead screwdriver and let some fluid out.

    DIY VCU service

The end walls of the VCU are 10mm thick. The easiest - but also the slowest way to drain the unit is to drill out the steel balls and let the fluid run out by itself. This takes several days. Getting the last drop out takes weeks if you do it this way. Heating will speed up the process. I do...

You mean "balance"? The VCU has a vibration damper bolted on to it because the fluid drops to the bottom of the unit when propeller shaft is not spinning. The grease nipples are also fitted 180 degrees apart so they cancel each other out.

    DIY VCU service

A VCU is a very simple contruction. Just a housing with two sets of rotating plates inside and filled with a fluid that thickens when the plates rotate in relation to each other. The thickness and amount of fluid determines the torque it takes to twist the unit. I would not attempt to drill all...

    DIY VCU service

I have done a couple of VCUs. The one in in my current Freelander I drained completely and then refilled with 30.000 cst silicone fluid. This one works OK but it took a very long time to drain it and it is also hard find fluid with this high viscosity. In one I did earlier I just part drained...

    Srs light

I had the same problem with the Open Air i bought earlier this spring. I took off the steering wheel, disconnected and checked the rotary coupler without finding anything with it and put everything back together - and now the SRS light goes out the way it should after the ignition is turned on :)

    SRS light gone

My SRS light used to go out as normal after I switched the ignition on but would come back on after a couple of second. I suspected the rotary coupling to be broken so I took it out and measured the resistance in the airbag cable. The continuity was OK so I put it back together. Now the lights...

TC & HDC lights on after start

When I worked on the PAS pump my halogen work lamp must have been to close to the plastic vacuum pipe between the inlet manifold and the ECU. The pipe had partially melted and became blocked. Then the ECU got no vacuum signal and had to figure out itself how to make the engine run. I replaced...

TC & HDC lights on after start

It is a '2000 1.8. The brake pedal does not pulse when I start the engine. If I press the accelerator and keep the revs up it takes almost a minute until the lights come on and the engine starts to run cleanly. If I don't, it takes just a couple of seconds.

The ABS light works the way it should: It goes out after a few meters driving.

TC & HDC lights on after start

My brake light switch is the two pole version and it works perfectly. The engine will start and run with a misfire for a few seconds, then the amber TC and HDC light come on and the misfire goes away. The lamps stay on and the HDC does not work.

TC & HDC lights on after start

When I turn the ignition on the warning lamps go out as normal but the TC and HDC lights come on when the engine fires. The engine also misfires immediately after is has started but runs normally afterwards. The TC and HDC lights stay on. The fault appeared after I replaced the PAS pump. I also...

    VCU Repair

Of course the only way to recondition a VCU is to disassemble it, clean it and fill it with the proper amount of correct fluid :) However it is possible to drain some of the old silicone and replace it with thinner fluid. If the unit is left with the plugs removed, the fluid will seep out...

    VCU Repair

My VCU slip adjustments are just experiments. But the results work OK for my needs. It would be interesting to know in which way others' attempts to loosen up stiff VCUs have failed. When I get time I will make further experiments. The unit I took out yesterday was just a little bit stiffer...
