its a "fuel burning heater" fitted to some to help pre heat the engine or with an extra kit heat your car for when you get in on a cold morning! as for the smokin search is your friend!!!!

have you tried a flow rate test for the lift pump? are your spill off pipes ok? on mine it was fine if ran once a day but if left standing air would get in the bad pipes and it would be a pig to start

If yours is hitting the bump stops id be looking at the quality of your springs, unless its extreme off roading/articulation mine on springs never hits the stops (except hitting a hidden bump under water at 30 rear end nearly took off!)

fix it!! i am in the same dilemma although mine is a 95 dse @ 210000 and im the 20th owner according to the log book!! needs blend motors, oil cooler pipes, viscous fan, abs accumulator, and poss suspension ball joints and now have a crack in the windscreen!! i will swap you and throw in a box...

I have one on springs with good oem shocks and it drives great certainly not dangerous hugs the corners never bottomed out with little body roll, certainly less than the sprinter van i used to drive!

I have a p38 that came on springs and mine rides ok rails round corners no wallowing and has never hit the bump stop on or off road? just a bit bouncy on the rough stuff!

you said it cleared up for a while when you had the ball joints replaced? could the have failed again? did they align the hub when they were fitted? i asked my local landy independent so called expert about aligning the hub he looked at me puzzled "we don't bother with that" ..... walking away.....

you have also said they skimmed the head? is it a 2.5 bmw diesel? dont think you can skim those just replace?

I would just change the spill pipes cost me £4 i had the same symptoms lazy to start when left overnight but better if it had been recently run and its been fine since starts on first turn now
