Don't you just take the top seal off the rad, rev the engine until air bubbles stop rising and also squeeze a water pipe?

Don't laugh, but other than pump water, what does the water pump do. I'm used to petrol, so I'm just wondering. Must be linked to the radiator? Why does a petrol not need one?
