2nd time 300tdi would not start just got towed

Thanks guys. The fooking thing started first time this morning even though the battery was only just charged enough to turn it over! I'll look up how to find/fix/murder the fuel cut off valve as the next step...it's much harder to find the fault of course when it's all working...... The...

2nd time 300tdi would not start just got towed

Oh the embarrassment.....this is the second time it has turned over fine but not started in the last 3 months the first time I left it for 15mins when the battery still had a bit left in it and it went, this time the battery went flat and I had to call the AA who also could not start it . In the...

300tdi Auto, knocking noise on idle.

Mine sounds horrible and similar symptoms to yours but I've shown it to a few people who know the 300tdi and they said "they all sound like that"! The direct injection makes em noisy and then so does a Worn vac pump etc in other words it might not be a problem at all Mind you the 200tdo is...

    Help with tyres

Sorry I disagree with the above post that going wider does not affect diameter - it does increase diameter. If you want wider but no increase in diameter you need to drop the ratio say to 65% for 265's

    Cambelt

Hi ref the anti freeze I reckon all green ones will be ok for a oem type rad, some red 5 year life stuff might be ok but some red stuff is not recommended by some of the manufacturers for use with brass or copper rads, only ally rads. If not having the long life stuff does not bother you I'd...

Chassis Cleaning, Protection and Body Corrosion

Ok now I look again the chassis rails look they are painted then maybe wax oiled but with a fair bit of what might be just overspray of the rubbery stuff which is thickly coated on the floor pan etc The rubbery stuff looks to be very effective but once water gets under it as it did due to water...

Chassis Cleaning, Protection and Body Corrosion

I'm interested in the more protection than when it left the factory Comment as my 96 300tdi seems to have a rubbery underseal all over the underneath which seems to have kept the rust away except for a little bit of the seam in the boot floor, don't all disco 1 have this underseal?

Which way round do the oil cooler pipes go?

If they are the correct hoses I don't think they can be fitted the wrong way not that it would make much difference anyway! From memory the bottom hose has a 90deg metal elbow section and the top not, and both hoses flexible section should only bend through 90deg not 180deg I hope that makes...

    300TDI starting problems

Are you waiting for the glow plugs to get hot my 300tdi turns over slow unless the plugs are hot I wait forca few secs after the plug light goes out then spin it.

    Anti-freeze

Here's a maker who says don't use his "formula" of OAT with brass/copper rads. Red Long Life Concentrated Coolant- Nulon Australia In my opinion stick to green unless the OAT is said to be Definitely ok with copper/brass rads. I blame the nulon for wrecking my copper rad on my surf inside 3...

could it be a air lock

I had no pressure in hoses replaced exp tank cap and got pressure in hoses. If you've got air in it that might cause overheating and of course that can blow the head gasket but it might still be ok, just keep trying to get any air out and your heater working if it still over pressurized Or...

    Anti-freeze

I've read that red OAT is not recommended for copper or brass rads only aluminium, the red stuff rots brass rads over time, it might not say that on the bottle though, but will in the more detailed specs.

Plastic Radiator plug - yes they fail

Hi James the rad was pretty much the same temp all over after a 10 min drive, maybe a bit less hot in the bottom right looking at the screen but not much in it. I spent quite a bit on surf to stop it overheating and sold it before the head cracked  The disco is not as bad but I need it...

Plastic Radiator plug - yes they fail

Hi James, yep the rad appears to be ok eg hot all over but although a new stat has improved the overheating it still got a bit hot towing during a retest with brass bung and I suspect when summer hits and there's a 600kg horse in the trailer it will get too hot. I'll try a new water pump next...

Plastic Radiator plug - yes they fail

There's a few threads mentioning to replace the plastic thermostat and radiator bungs with brass versions I can confirm the plastic bungs can fail catastrophically! Replace them now! My 96 300tdi had got a bit hot a couple of times when towing home the wifes new 1100 kg horse trailer up long...

    abs scare

Hi was your abs warning light on when this happened? If so I think this is a common fault reported elsewhere on this forum, mine does it but only if the sensor has caused an air gap abs fault to be indicated first which it does every so often, usually during a long drive or if I hit a large...

    Power steering leak

The way to tell for sure if it's the pressure pipe is put the steering on full lock and you will see oil spray out of a pressure pipe with a leak. In nz the hose suppliers will not crimp new hose onto old pipes on pas but they will hard solder threaded unions into the metal pipe and supply a...
