Yes, fuel pump failure is likely and has been covered on this forum regularly - try the search facility for more info. We replaced both fuel pumps on our 2002 TD4 a year or two ago, but used cheap Britpart items. One failed again thus summer, so we have mow replaced both with genuine Land...

Yes, it goes into a default mode that is pretty good, but not as fuel efficient or effective as having a functional MAF. Try Roverron's website for MAF advice... Tuning-diesels for cheaper diesel tuning.

I agree with MHM. But I'll also chip in that I have a Defender with two sets of tyres, road and MTs. Changing them over is such a blooming hastle. I wish I had got set of decent ATs and just used them all year round.

We have BFGoodrich ATs on the Camel and road tyres on the TD4. The TD4 has occasionally worn the ATs but the road tires were fine in the snow. The BFG AT tyres are good on road as well as off. Lasted 80,000miles plus!!!!!

The Freelander 1 is permanent four wheel drive, achieved through a transfer box (IRD) and a viscous coupling (IRD). This is then enhanced by the ABS, traction control and HDC systems. There is no central diff lock (not required because of the TC and independent suspension) and the transfer box...

Ride is better than Disco 1 and 2, and as for Defender... I used to drive a D2 at work, and I own a Defender, and I will quite confidentally say that the Freelander is a better road car, and I think the best and most affordable allrounder. Driven well it is suprisingly capable offroad. Cheers...

What colour is the HDC lamp? The thump could be the vcu mounts, or the rear diff mounts. Cheers Blippie

You can do a visual inspection of the engine hoses in order to rule out a split turbo hose. A fault code will be handy to work out if it is, say, a fuelling problem, as suggested, and Tuning-diesels for cheaper diesel tuning. is great for fault finding. Cheers Blippie
