    Td5 knocking sound from underneath

Find yourself a new mechanic. No mechanic would tell anyone to let it get worse other than one that wants more money to fix a bigger job later or simply has no idea what they are talking about? A simple cheap fix now could turn into an expensive and catastrophic breakdown later if not sorted...

    Low fuel light nightmare

I have the same problem on my TD5 Defender. Fill up and light goes out. 75 ish miles later light comes on and stays on. Also fuel gauge randomly shows full, even when near empty. Checked wiring and manually operated fuel float and all works fine except the fuel lamp stays on unless float arm...

TD5 garage clearance - various for sale

Would be an expensive way to collect spares mate. You would be better getting a used one from a breakers for probably under £100. Non OEM new are nearly £400 if they have any and double that from LR but my local dealer says they are on indefinite back order which means they cant get them. This...

    Er... what's this??

Defender has a transmission brake which works on rear wheels via the prop shaft. You therefore need a chock when lifting any of the rear wheels. If the centre diff lock is engaged you can lift one rear wheel at a time (in gear with brake applied) but you will get some lateral movement of the...

    TD5 AC removal

Thats exactly what I did. Leave the compressor in place as it cost nowt and no messing about with pulleys and belts etc.

    speedo td5

You need to clean and tighten the ECU earth connection if it does it on a regular basis. Also make sure the battery cables are clean and tight.

    TD5 blowing top hoses *fixed*

Whilst I have never reused stretch head bolts it is common practice in many African countries as they just dont have access to new ones in the bush. When I worked in Tanzania a company mechanic stripped the head off one of our TD5s and replaced a leaking head gasket (plastic dowel syndrome)...

Defender td5 with possible headgasket failure

You can buy the steel dowels but if you have a lathe you can simply turn some. The harder the material the better. If you know what you are doing make some out of grade 8 bolts. You need to make sure they are a good fit otherwise you are wasting your time. For what they cost I'd order some from...

    Quantum platinum oil in Td5

Some cheap rotor filters bind when the filter hosing is screwed shut so they never spin. I have found the central brass bearing is just a tad too long on some of the cheap filters. You can file them down or if you are posh machine or surface grind them but make sure you get all the metal filings...

    Genuine oil filters

Be careful with non genuine rotor filters as often the brass central bearing is a tad too long (about 1mm) which causes the rotor to bind when the lid is screwed shut. If it dont spin it dont filter. An easy way to check is that when you turn the engine off you should hear the rotor slowing down...

TD5 aluminium rad and fan options

I removed the useless and broken air con from my CSW and used the electric fan from the air con radiator which also got binned to make room for an decent intrercooler. I simply removed the visco fan and mounted the leccy fan where the visco fan was using the original shroud. Worked fine with an...

    lumpy tick over

Check the connectors on the throttle pedal are clean. Mine did that for a month or two and when I took the pedal off to clean and paint the foot well the throttle connector was very manky with dirt and what looked like kettle scale. A quick squirt with carb cleaner, brush out with an old...

    Defender td5 random tap noise

If you can listen to the engine with a stethoscope or a long screwdriver you may be able to hear where the ticking is coming from. It could also be a sticking hydraulic valve lifter but these are a bugger to change and not for the faint hearted. No special tools needed to adjust the injector...

Sorry not really got any Disco body parts. Mainly just Defender. I don't think the mirrors are the same as on the Defender as the Disco but I know Defender ones are dirt cheap so I did not keep any. Thanks for asking though and if you decide you need any mechanical bits just ask.
