They really do work. I forgot to take mine out from under a wheel one day and it is sufficient to to stall the engine when you try and drive away.

Defender has a transmission brake which works on rear wheels via the prop shaft. You therefore need a chock when lifting any of the rear wheels. If the centre diff lock is engaged you can lift one rear wheel at a time (in gear with brake applied) but you will get some lateral movement of the vehicle as the slack in the transmission train is taken up. Get in the habit of chocking the wheels whenever you jack any vehicle as they take no prisoners if they start moving.

i use mine all the time, i have 2 and they work well, i keep my LR in the garage and use this to chock it with the hand brake off

The jacking instructions on my Disco are very specific in saying "engage CDL prior to jacking it up". And from memory my old RRC said the same.
