I may be talking out of my arse but if you had a short but it wasn't getting a good earth so it was unable to blow the fuse. So when you replaced the earth it was enough the then blow the fuse. Often I have fixed motorbikes just by taking the time to clean electrical connections.

If you look closely at the glass you will see there are thing strips of wire in the glass. They heat up when you turn on the window heating element. On some aftermarket windscreen glass they only put heating elements on only half the window (drivers side). How thick are the strips?

The mirrors are controlled by moving the tilt etc switch to centre then move it down once to close, then move down again to open. So I think it not a simple on/off switch as it returns to centre after you open/close it.
