Engine was taking 3-4 turns before starting.i know a new shinny set of glow plugs will help so payed the handsome sum of £9.50 pounds for a set.came in blue boxes hmmm britpart sounds good :D now it only takes 3-4 heat cycles to start :(....I got what I payed for.

This time of year glow plugs wont be your issue.
Ive go the ebay cheapies in both my tdis no issues and they have been in there a few years now.

Old plugs seem fine all plugs getting 12v and heat up going to refit old set (beru) tomorrow don't like working on engines in the dark.oh it's an edc.

OK, so you are blaming the cheapo glow plugs without knowing if they are different from what you had..........:p:p

Cheers

Oh I am sure,

My 300tdi, needs no heat cycles to start. In fact I do not even give the glow plugs a chance.

Cheers

Service the injectors

+1 - make sure you get the right pressures set up - and be ever so careful of #4 - it is NLA, so you don't want to break it....

A tdi should start all year round without needing glow plugs, mine certainly does....

Agreed - Whilst the EDC one's do need a bit longer due to having to find out "where they are" in terms of CPS signals etc.... but it should not need heat at all this time of year...

Presume you've done tappets and all the usual suspects like lift pump, fuel filter, checked for spill pipe leaks etc., ... etc. etc.......

I took EDC off mine to get away from a knackered sensor on #4....:)

Yup checked and serviced can't get the sedimentor apart as all nuts are rusty and very round will have to bypass. have tried starting without heating plugs totally hopeless will start eventually coughing and spluttering big puff of smoke.just refitted old plugs now starts after a couple of turns a vast improvement looked into getting injectors serviced but for the money going to dump the edc and replace injectors when I have the money and time but to be honest starts on the coldest of days after 2-3 rotations I'm happy with that.

It'll start better on a standard VE pump - I was surprised how much difference it made to mine :) - I'd suggest getting a full width intercooler and tuning it up much like these guys do:-

145 HP makes mine a nice drive.

IMHO, don't get of the sedimenter - it's there for a very good reason.
