good plan. I have no idea if the system still has it's cats - concentrating on the basics for now like 'will it unlock, will it start, will it stop', but it stinks on petrol.
 
If yours is an export model that is not unusual. But any petrol P38 made for the British domestic market has always had them. The fitting of cats to petrol engined vehicles for road use in this country became compulsory in 1993.

Yep correct. Visual only 7 pin. No cat on LPG, advisory til 31st March. 1st April an automatic fail.

And then I came over all frosty as its on LPG and runs a non cat stainless system:doh:

So is that a fail or not?
 
Defo my drivers side cat, if your under the car it sounds like a bag of spanners banging around in it! :rolleyes:

Probably not the right thread to ask but are the cheapos on ebay any good? £160 seems like a total bargain... to good to be true?

Got my cats off ebay for same sort of money. they ok. admit i did cheat when changed them and cut the link pipe and out a sleeve joint in as couldnt b bothered to take the gear box cross member off

Should not think so. Full cat test was only introduced into MOT test on 1st August 1992. All vehicles fitted with cats at that time had two emission tests. The standard one and the full cat one. But that was only for evaluation purposes. Full cat test was not official until 1st April 93. Think full cat test only applies for vehicles 93 on fitted with cats and advanced emission control. Depends on interpretation. It does now say, IF FITTED AS STANDARD MUST BE PRESENT. Think some cars prior to that had cats but not advanced emission control. So the full test would not apply. Does your car have Lambda sensors?
 
Can't see the MOT folks being that thorough, if it looks like its got cats and passes emission are they really going to dig deeper?

I was tempted to de cat mine as they are rattling like mad! Guess I'll be putting new cats back on then! :rolleyes:

Just stick a couple of meaty (whiskers?) self-tappers through the casing to stop the cats rattling - works a treat. Although technically screwing cats is illegal as is all other bestiality.
 
that's good news. MoT is due well before April. If they've been removed, I'll have some empty boxes made up.

I guess if the log is leaking, it would smell. When you take the filler nozzle off, it stinks.

Any tester worth his salt will know there are no cats in the box by the emissions readings, ie when the car is started and then held at 2K rpm you should see a sudden drop as the cats "light up" no such change and the tester knows the cats are either duff or not there - if he cares...

Yes Wammers, lambda sensors are all present and correct.

It is fitted with advanced emission control then. You may have a problem. Not sure to be honest. It just says if cat was fitted as standard it must be present. No year of qualification is mentioned. But it also says IF vehicle qualifies for a full cat test cat must be present. So maybe it is a coverall situation. But it also says that if vehicle passes full cat emission check but has no cat (running on LPG) it is only an advisory until 1st April. Cat must be refitted before next test. As i understand it.

I'll give that a try, had crossed my mine if a few tech screws would help it for now.
 
Cats on bike are pretty recent are they not? Don't think either my VFR or FJR had a cat and over here there isn't even an MOT for bikes:D:D:D

Some bikes have had catalytic converters since the late 90s. I hacked my o/e exhaust to bits to get it off years ago, the new one gained me 16bhp at the back wheel so I don't want to go back to an o/e one or it'd feel like a moped! :D
 
what about diesels as i allways remove them on my cars? or does it just apply to petrol cars?

Diesels don't have cats as such, they are classed as particle filters i believe. Don't think diesels run hot enough to fire a cat up. Maybe wrong have a look for info. According to testers manual ONLY petrol vehicles that qualify for a full cat test are checked for the presence of a cat. Only on those vehicles is a missing cat a fail.

How do they prove you missed a cat5 do you have to have blood and gut and fur in your tyre treads?
