Paul D and I have both found ourselves practicing gate descriptions, this is a worry to us :eek::eek::eek::eek:

We need to behave responsibly when laning, therefore it is of the upmost importance to ensure the correct gate is correctly dealt with, therefore they must be described so as to avoid any possible doubt.

Only thing that might cause an issue is if 2 identical gates are encountered, one of which needs closing the other doesn't. (This hasn't happened yet, so i'll worry about it when it does)

Yes I have given that some thought too , now I am worrying you as well :p

My solution to this problem is simple. Take a photograph with your iphone, taking great care that both identical gates are contained within this picture. Give it a file name containing the grid reference which you can obtain from Memory Map.

Then upload it to Landyzone using Tapatalk, the person at the rear of the group can then access it, check the grid reference, and all is well.

Simple :D

You mean you don't go out beforehand, label and log gates with a clear laminated, wipe clean, bio-degradable colour coded number system???

Well if you're not willing to put the preparation in..........:p:p

I actually considered this alternative at some length. Obviously you did not :p

Due to a unique feature of the British weather called "****ing it down" (that is how we uncouth Northerns describe it anyway) The clear laminated wipe clean, bio-degradable colour coded numbers systems, how can I describe it, bio-degrade

This then leaves the distinct possibility that the numbers can be misread. As each vehicle would need a laminated bio-degradable list showing which number had to be opened and shut. You can only imaging the confusion.

This coupled with the very real risk that the farmers might choose to have a gate open today, but shut it tomorrow, makes it an unworkable proposal.

yer know, was thinkin bout this last weekend.

front motor had a load of fridge magnets.
and a load of bits of paper.
and a marker pen.

write "open" or "closed" on paper.
stick it to gate with fridge magnet.

last motor removes it and knows what to do.

or just shout it up on the cb...

:rolleyes: That what Zip does now, it just takes about 5 minutes to say "galvanised farm gate with 6 horizonal bars, I vertical bar, 2 diagonal bars, hinged to the left, opening outwards with a non horse friendly fastening.

Oh and that just my not very good attempt, but I am working on it.

I have it! A hand painted bar-code system and hand held scanners logged into a system with the lead Landy as admin to input the relevant info....

After the CB aerial I thought you would know better than that :p:p:p:p:p.

What if the gate was made of aluminium or even wood. And dont even consider the gate posts, they could be made of stone

This could be a possibility, I will have to take a couple of weeks to consider it though :D

ferk me,
bit of white baler twine for open
bit of blue baler twine for shut.
hang it over owt that sticks out.

We used to hang a wire coat hanger over the top of the gates with either a red cloth (for close) or a green cloth (for open) stuck to it.

Simple and it worked every time!

Us Old Gimmers didn't need any fancy stuff!

in my ****ed stupor, it occurred to me, that if a gate aint got owt hangin off it, leave it open.
saves someone getting out of lead and last motor to remove it.

coitanger's a good idea though, with summat dangling off it for the last motor to see.

These are good ideas, but only for identical gates.

Laning trips would not be the same without Zips gate descriptions, they make the trips even better.
