Fair play wammers. I know you are firmly in the diesel camp the same as I am in the petrol camp. It was probably my misfortune 5 years ago to drive a stardard P38 diesel before I brought the petrol. It was so slow to pull away I thought there was something wrong with it. Would have been no good trying to pull out at Hyde Park Corner in the rush hour!!
By the time I'd factored in the extra purchase cost, reduced economy because of constant peddle to the metal to get the thing to go , or paid for a new chip/re-map, I'd figured that equalled a years worth of petrol, so opted for a V8.

Ped was just a cheap shot at the dozels, I didn't think they made mopeds anymore because the kids couldn't afford the insurance, or if they could Daddy buys em a new BMW:D

i have a 2.5dt 1997 auto 158'000 now on the clock and i still consider him to be the most reliable car i have had he's been with me for 6years now and still can't bring myself to sell him on incase i get some heap of ****. (better the devil you know) i tow a wessex horse trailer at 1.1tonne and 2 horses 15.2hh with ease! i had a problem with the over heating in the early days but sorted with a new radiator. i drive him ever day and he's a work horse by day and comfy car to go out and about in by night. you have the odd hickup here and there but the parts are reasonably cheap and your best friend is the garage chap who will listen about how "the guys on landyzone think its this!!!" the air suspension saves you when you've taken the trailer off on uneven ground and you can hitch up with ease by raising or lowering the air suspension.
being an auto the towing is smooth and all my horses are willing to travel again after the p38 has taken them out.
i would say £3000 is a fair budget, don'y be scared of cheaper cars and spending a bit on them to get it serviced or put right. mines probably only really worth a couple of thousand realistically but he's worth 10 to me in his ablility to tow and work hard.
don't be put off by the chaps on here and the cracked heads. i towed 2 horses up a a very big hill called telegraph over a mile long boiling over, filled it with water and off he went again, i was probably lucky but the BMW guy says the engine is the best thing on it.

Haha, at least they both agree on the Diesel option. I guess its down to personall choice & circumstances. Ill be keeping mine for another couple o years & then upgrading, either a newer p38, or if i can stretch to the l322.

No she didn't. I work on the principal that if you let someone believe they are right, even though they are wrong, it keeps the peace. Lets just say she won't be getting the servicing contract on any of my vehicles.:D:D:D
 
I got a 1998 2.5 dse, i have put just over 200k on it now, it is a TOW motor, it has a trailer on almost every day, anything upto a "heavy" 3.5 ton when needed :doh:, it has been to spain pulling 3 ton, has been up and down england, wales and scotland more times than the flu, to date it has had a second hand transfer box, i got paid £125 to replace it !!! 2 water pumps, a fip, and 2 air bags on the rear, would i have anything different, you gotta be joking, its the best tow motor i have ever had.
when i unhook it at the end of the day, blow it out with the airline (i'm a messy git at work) and i got a nice personal motor.

All the remarks about been handy with a spanner, yes totally, but that helps with any motor, it can be a head ache, what motor isnt...

Find a well looked after one, regardless of age and mileage, look after it and hope ....enjoy it when it runs good, when it dont you will want it back asap.

I have tried most 4x4's on the market, but am sticking with what i got.

I have tried most 4x4s out there as well. Sofar I'm most impressed with the Toyota Landcruiser.

Can't really comment on the RR ....haven't really driven it yet, apart from up and down the drive :)
I hope to have this pleasure soon though...

If I had the cash to buy and pay for dealer servicing, I would have gone for a Land Cruiser, Toyota reliablility is the reason you see them being used by NATO and others in harsh environments. You would never see any Range Rover working in the same conditions. I'm no RR fan, I bought it because thay are cheap and full technical info is available to do my own repairs. Having got it I love it, but if I win the lotto I will not be buying another.:)

I WILL. Brand new with a warranty! .......suppose i will have to buy a ticket first though.

Got to say, i am a ig fan of the landcruisers, that would be one of the few on my shortlist.

I wouldn't touch a new one with a barge pole, over priced, over complicated, crap quality and unreliable by comparison with Jap stuff.
