Hello mate. Thats not what i was implying.

I meant because anyone with a mechanic mate who has a garage can stamp the book.
And it happens more than you might think.

Also anyone who knows a mechanic that works at a main dealer, can get the book stamped. That also happens a lot more than you may think.

yes i would. However, service history isn't worth the paper it's written on unless it's main dealer.

I've had services in the past at main dealers (Vauxhall and BMW spring immediately to mind) that certainly weren't done properly or thoroughly so I wouldn't put much faith in that either. I avoid them like the plague these days - I can get a real service for sensible money at indies.

Well that only adds more to the point i was making! lol

Mrs Smith might think ooh its got lots of history thats good but anyone who tinkers with cars will know that service history doesnt mean a lot.
It's nice to see if the cam belt has been changed though with a reciet for the belt.

Again, just adds to the point i was making.

When you buy a second hand car you will always be taking a leap into the un known. You just know from experience how a car should feel when you drive it and what feelings and nopises should be heard and shouldn't be heard.

If your spending a lot of money on a second hand car from a private seller, the best thing you can do is get the RAC or AA to do a check on it.

OK, I have found a potential P38 I am interested in buying, but there's two factors counting against it:

1. It has been stood since 2008 (indoors though, I think)
2. It has no service history

So, why am I even considering it? Well, firstly it's cheap. That's not a good enough reason I know; I've looked at a few cheap P38's and walked away already, but I don't wanna chuck loads of money at one either so cost is very much a factor.

Secondly, it actually looks in pretty good nick - interior looks clean (although I am sure it has been valeted) and from the photo's I have seen, the bodywork looks in good shape too. I am yet to physically view the car. It has also 'only' covered around 120k miles - most in my price range are around 170k.

Thirdly, it is just the right car I'm after - a DSE auto in blue with cream leather, even has front and rear light guards and (plastic) bull bars which I'd want for greenlaning anyway. That little lot would add up to several hundred pounds I'm sure.

So, would you consider it (can do without the "No, it's a P38" comments!)? It's a good hours drive away so don't want to waste a journey.

The private plate (not included) says "Doc" and the dealer who took it in tells me it was one of many cars and just stopped being used. I would guess the service history was there and has just gone missing over time.

The way I look at it is if it starts and runs fine, it is probably worth a punt. The only things that would perish over time unused would be the airbags I guess, but replacing those isn't a big job I understand, and will cost around £300 for Arnott Gen II bags (not sure I'd bother going for Gen III's at double the cost as the extra ground clearance can be had by reprogramming the EAS ECU anyway, as I understand it).

So, what ya reckon? Worth a look or walk away?
mate inless it is very very cheep id say walk away;) a car that has sat for 3 years could just be head ake arfter head ake:doh: ... it could go bad and work out more to fix then buying a good car. cars do not like to be left sitting around:( i would spend my money on something with more miles.. but is in every day use.. service history would not bother me but i would have a quick look on line at the mot history..and give it a good test drive

Check if its a chain... mine has a chain, not belt.

you havent said a price....

rangies arent cheap to run but cheaper if you stick around here.

i notice your in great missenden, there is a good LR specialist near us called Graham Goodyer in Coleshill that could do lines etc, (others are available) they have sorted me out and also my dads Sport.

Have a good test of it and say what you have found on here and i am sure your mind will be swayed, Range Rovers are a heart purchase though, there is just something about them!

mine came with not much service history, but LOTS of receipts, much better i think.

i do love how people hang on car cliches, my tennants car has been owned by her after her grandfather bought it new so could read 'owned by grandfather now a lady owner' which may look great to some, but i wouldnt touch her car with my mates barge pole, its a bloody wreck!

I beg to differ! My mate had an RAC inspection on a car, passed with flying colours and then blew up on the way home. He got his £49 back, but that was it! Rubbish.

Oh, I was all ready to go view the car and the dealer emailed me to say someone had wandered in and bought it for the asking price (£2k). Bugger!

THis is a recent thing that i found useful.
Can remember what it takes to get into it but its on the DVLA site.
I saw that mine had done nearly all its milage (100k)in the first 3 years which i would take to suggest that it was dealer serviced when it was in heavy use in the last 7 years its only had an extra 30k added.
The more recent MOTs will show any failures and the reason for it aswell.

Hello mate. I wasn't talking about range rovers specifically. I just meant cars in general.

"It's nice to see if the cam belt has been changed though with a reciet for the belt."

Is what you said.. the thread is refering to him buying a RR with no s/history or not. not about cars in general.. Lugnuts.!

Ouch!

I paid the RAC to look at a 1996 MR2 for me once. This was about 8 years ago now.
It cost about £270 iirc and it was a 240 point check. Meaning they checked 240 (or whatever the number was) things on the car. The RAC guy also took it for a 20 minute or 10 mile test drive aswell.
Like i said, there are different levels of checks they can do.
He gave me a big list with box ticked with a cross or a tick. He said the car was mint apart from it needed new discs and pads which i then knocked off £200 off the asking price and the seller was happy to do so. It had only done 29,000 miles when i bought it so i wasn't expecting anything major anyway.

The thing that annoys me is that i DIDN'T do this when i bought this piece of crap L322!! The thought didn't even enter my mind! lol
You live and learn.

It's only money at the end of the day and on the plus side it gives me something to do. My new radiator and front air spring come tomorrow and i can't wait to get all dirty!

Shame the misses doesn't share the same feeling. :(
