Hi all,

after many years of wanting a Land Rover, I have finally decided to get one.

While we originally wanted a Defender, we thought that a Disco would be better for us as it had additional creature comforts and was more family friendly.

Unfortunately, after a few months of research (books/forums/climbing in them) I have found out that to be able to stick kids safely in the rear seats (one of the main reasons we are getting a LR) we would have to get a Disco TD5 as it has the forward facing rear seats and proper seat belts.

So we thought that if we were going to have to spend extra to get a newer TD5, we might as well go for a Defender 110 County, as this has been both my wife’s and my dream vehicle for many years. (At least we want the same thing, rare for us :)), and fit the Exmoor trim seats as and when we find them second hand.

So, I am now in the position of knowing what we want which is half the battle, and have a budget of £4K max, and am starting to read all the classifieds and adverts on the web and in magazines to get a better idea on what is out there. I don’t care if it is battered and bruised, just mechanically sound and fairly reliable as it will be my daily drive to work and also be used for lamping foxes/rabbits.

We aim to purchase Jan/Feb as hopefully the market will be a little depressed after Christmas, although so will I be with 3 kids in the house, and it also gives me a few more months to learn as much as possible.

As I said, I have done a fair amount of research and can fumble my way around an engine, but what I would really appreciate is if an expert (read: landy nutcase) could come with me when I view a prospective vehicle and check it over with me.

Would anyone be willing to do this? We are in Surrey, just South of Dorking.

This would not only put my mind at rest but also ensure that we start, what should be a long and happy Land Rover ownership.

I think he's saying if he was gonna spend 4K to buy a td5 disco then that put's him in the range where he could afford a 110 county so he might as well buy a defender but I don't think he meant a td5 county.
 
found this not a county but not a big job to convert it.

trouble with that is you could easily spend another £500 on extra seat/bets/side windows - and i bet its a bit of a dog
 
Oh I know and a bit more besides. that was in the recent results page for brightwells 4x4 auction. so that's the price it went for. There's an R reg county tdi went for £12,700.

I certainly wasn't thinking about a TD5 County, prob a 1990 - 1992 County for me due to my budget, although I did see a rather nice series III County a while back...

Am I likely to get a half decent one for around £4K? Or will it be a pile of rubbish. Can't go any higher as it is already more than I wanted to/can spend.

I take it there are no issues with buying a C-G reg as long as it is sound? Seems that land rovers are the only cars where age isn't important. I know my H reg Clio is starting to get to the end of it's (economical) life despite me doing all the repairs. But then it is French.

type of engine and state of chassis are the main value indicators for landies. if it's a 2.5n/a diesel with a dodgy chassis your looking at they can go as low as £400 if it's got a galvanised chassis and a tdi engine they can go as high as £12k
 
6 bolts or so and they can be hauled out easily leaving you with an empty space to fill with bikes, prams, swimming pools, rubble,dogs, kids, wives, friends, bonfire material............

oi dont you go slagging orf me fav site. i've had some right bargins orf there - usually at when peeps set the finishing time to 4am

my current fav vehicle out of all the LRs i've got is a G reg 110 orf ebay for not much, now got a 200Tdi in and is a perfect example of a well looked after vehicle, if you look after them they'll look after you
 
I recently PXed a J plate 200tdi County for 4K and it was a goodn'. Only got rid because the Missus wanted a 90. They are out there. The bench seats come out easy and its worth fitting the rear FF seats with legroom extension kits or getting someone handy to move the backs back a couple of inches. Then my kids are both 6' 3".
 
"just mechanically sound and fairly reliable" dont look for a landy you need a toyota! i am a keeper here in scotland and as such i have to use landys as my only means of transport and for lamping ect. to be honest they are not the best 4x4xfar anymore. 4K could get you a nice quiet motor which would be alot safer than a landy and do the same job.

you know what you want but expect to be hart broken when your ride turns out to be a liabillity.

And judgin by the 05 plate one i seen yesterdy the chassis'll be fooked before its 6 year owld

heh, it's ok. I love Fleabay too. :)

Regarding engines. Should I hold out for a Tdi or pick up a n/a diesel if one comes along at a good price? Or is the state of the chasis more important? I have seen a n/a C reg just now: Find 1986 LAND ROVER 110 4C SW D GREY on eBay within, Land Rover Range Rover, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 11-Nov-07 18:08:24 GMT)

I'm fairly handy with a spanner but would only class myself as a novice mechanic.

Have done bearings, engine mounts, track rods, wishbones, electrics (central locking & electric windows), thermostats/radiators etc before but am only really at the 'heat it up and hit it stage'. Can weld but wouldn't trust my life to it!
