got a problem that started today once the motor got hot it wouldnt start even after waiting hour whilst the bonnet i threw some cold water on the pump and voilĂ  it started (I know i shouldnt have thrown water on it but was at my wits end at this point after sitting outside a wimmins hairdressers for an hour looking like a stalker ) it ran for 6 miles and cut out did the same again and it started and ran the extra mile to get me home it does have a hot start fix fitted by previous owner but not sure its working correctly had new injectors and spill pipes and new glow plugs

I've heard someone else on here have similar issues with a similar fix. Wish I could remember who! Wammers might know. Got a feeling GritValve might have been in on the conversation too.

Fuel temperature sensor.

You need diagnostics on the FIP.

i will stick the computer on it tomorrow and see what faults come up not sure what i am looking for on the fip, did a search and checked a few things like air bubbles in the clear pipe and thats ok it produces 13.7 volts on tick over might try and clean manifold and inter cooler out in case its clogging summit

Should have 14.2 volts at 2K rpm. Check the EGR if it has one.

no egr its a 1997 dse
found grits thread and he cleaned all the connectors to quote grits last post

" I took apart and cleaned the connectors to the fip cps both temp sensors maf oil pressure fuse box main loom cleaned maf and changed ecu sensor .

It's not done it since been to birmingham and back its faultless now the only suspect thing I found was a loose connector block to fip the round one .

Either that or I frightend her with the nano .

Think it was the loose connector but can't be sure
I been fiddling with the rpm settings to a lower and higher range that could or cleaned the tracks a bit in the pump by varying its normal stop position .
All I can say is it works fine now "

so will try this as well once i get some electric cleaner

BRAND NEW (LUCAS) TEMPERATURE SENSOR FITS RANGE ROVER P38 2.5 BMW DIESEL MODELS FROM 1995 TO 2000 (>YA001722).

Part No: STC2299G
No, that's the engine temperature sender, not the fuel temperature sender, but that would make it run rich if it's faulty.

Glad you fixed it, there is no MAF on pre EGR engines, I assume you mean the MAP sensor.

Think that was a quote of Grits post. Muts may still be struggling.

Aye mate I was quoting grits post never got to do anything today the kids arrived and parents were here for a visit :( so fingers crossed i will check it out tomorrow will also give me a chance to find some electrical cleaner :)

The P38 did have a hot start problem, even though the previous owner (to me) fitted the little black box. I reckon it wasn't fitted correctly by him so maybe worth taking it off and refitting it. Apart from this, is she behaving herself?

she is just having a bit of a tizzy mate :D theres a few things that needed looking at but its all the fun of p38s :behindsofa: when are you getting another mate :D

well i cleaned intercooler / air intake manifold and plastic pipe in top of intake cleaned loads of electrical contacts and sorted a few dodgy wires and took hot start of its now gone from 8.9mpg to 18mpg wuuup a doooo took it to middle of the temp gauge and it started better never cut out (he says with crossed fingers):D

That was a quote from me data

Mud your symptoms are unlike mine
Mine would run start hot or cold but
Would randomly tickover unevenly for a split second
Repeatedly and sometime stall. , but always restart .
Yours Sound like fip temp sensor faulty
Slack in the chains or your hotfix cannot cope or is faulty
a clean of all connectors won't do any harm tho .

And I've just missed the last page lol
