Yes I have the starter Earth to the chassis, it’s the actual battery Earth I think is causing the problem now, where is the best place to bolt that Earth . The old starter did spin on the bench but not as quick as the new one.

Bolt it to the block somewhere along with the battery tray and front radiator panel, that's what I did.
Make sure the cable is good, heavy enough and everything is clean.
Best to fit a new wire and earth clamp to battery with good connection to a block bolt.
I have known old cables to corrode inside the sheath creating a resistance.
Had similar issues with my 2a last year only in this case it was the positive cable.
After renewal I opened up the old cable to find that several inches of wire near the batt terminal had turned to black crud.
just had a look again today and the only place the Earth lead actually works is under one of the bolts on the rocker cover, it starts every time and hits over fast.
