hello all first time on here! ive got a 1997 300tdi defender 130 hicap with all sort of wiring issues involving the lights... i wondered if anyone here had a wiring diagram for the lights circuts? some sod has been here before and made a right pigs ear of everything!!
first fault, the indacators, hazards or brake lights, make the fuel guage go down when switched on
2nd, left hand indacator has little postive feed to rear and the front side light flashs with the indacato
basicly turning some lights on seem to make a few other pop on that shouldnt be on, some will either not come on at all or light up dim. the only ones that do seem to work as they should are the headlights. im having a right head ache with this thing trying to start off where some ones finished! ive already done the obvios, bulbs and holders, next on the list is earth points
any help or advice will be much apprieciated many thanks!

Look at all the grounds your next on the list should have been the first.

+1, classic earth fault description. Worth getting/making a few new one from the battery to chassis and adding a battery to bulkhead earth lead.

Don't know about the 300s but my 1986 developed all sorts of leccy problems when I forgot to reattach the earth (with a ring terminal) that attachs on top of the clutch or brake pedal box cover. Pop the bonnet and have a look there.

Can I jump onto this post too? Need to wire in a plug for trailer lights, can I just piggy back into the standard wiring or do I need to get one of those fancy boxes?
P.S. For info my rear loom is in the back of my other car, so anything is possible!!

you can from the drivers side rear corner

Definately sounds like an earthing issue. You could try adding an extra earth from the rear right corner (where the connections for a tow bar are taken from) and running it to the chassis or tub. Earthing points on the bulkhead corrode and cause problems, 300 tdi defenders get earthing problems on the loom in the front left wing, check fuses and light housings for corrosion/water.

Hope this helps

Richard

Should be able to use the existing connectors behind the right panel in the back of the tub.

See the blue/black bullet connectors in this photo:

right thanks for all the replies! as it goes, the truck recently had a new rear cross member fitted/welded on, before me owning it! the loom runs through the right side of the chassis, some ones forgottern about that and while welding wich has caused all the insulating to melt in the loom, making everything, go absolutly crazy! haha. ive remade the loom now so everythings back working as it should :)
