2005 td4 130k miles.

I keep a log of fuel fill ups and mileage and Ive got a clear difference between summer and winter mpg rates of about 15%.

Mine does about 420 on a full tank in summer but less once winter sets in. I generally use the same brand of fuel and havent done anything to change anything rhst should affect fuel efficiency. This has been the case over the last 3-4 years.

Is this common?

I was wondering if the air temp sensor might have something to do with it.

Any ideas?

Common, many reasons.
Tyres are getting harder towards plastic unless winter tyres.
Takes longer for engine to reach optimal temperature.
Cold air has higher density
In sure there's more

Is this common?

Yes, perfectly normal.

My own TD4 automatic will loose 2 or 3 Mpg over the colder months, when compared to summer time driving.

There's lots of reasons for this, but it's mostly down to increased loading on the engine electrical system, (lights on more, heated rear screen use, heated seats, etc) which causes the alternator to make more power, and so the engine has to consume more fuel to keep up with the demand.

There is also additional drag from thickening oils over the colder months, and tyre pressures will drop too, unless you're on the ball at keeping them correct.

It's all perfectly normal stuff though.

FBH ?

I truthfully would think that you'd get better mpg due to the colder denser air, but i guess when you look at the bigger picture it makes sense for it to be less as mentioned above.

Get better powah from colder denser air, not mpg hehe.

fbh = fuel burning heater or fairly big hammer, one of those two.

My FL1 TD4 fuel consumption depends on the ambient temperature, in the winter it averages around 42mpg and in the summer if it is very hot weather I can get 47 mpg and in average summer weather 45 is nearer the mark, impressive for a fairly heavy vehicle

Wow! I've been keeping a log of ours on an app and since I got it last May, it has averaged 33.28 MPG. Best fillup has been 37.12 and worst (yesterday towing about 1.5 tons) was 27.4 MPG.

Thanks.
Mine does 28-29 mpg during summer and drops to 25ish in winter.

No FBH (its the very basic E model).

Thanks for the replies. Ill stop worrying about it then.

Cant wait for thick snow to see how good these Malatesta Kobra's are like as rheyre fairly crap on road.
