Hi all, my heated windscreen heats little strips of the windscreen, so looking to replace. There is power etc but I think a few small stone chips have caused some damage. I looked on Autoglass and they want £742! I can get a heated screen (bearmach) for around £250+VAT, but not sure how easy they are to fit. Has anyone any experience of doing it?

Mine cost about £70 due to stone damage cracking it.

Was that your insurance excess? I was going to try not to go through the insurance but I think if I park it near the kids when they've got the air rifle out that'll be the easier option! :D

It was. Took two vans to come and do it and got a windscreen with all the demister strips working!

It's the sealing of it that concerns me - I think I'll go with my second option!
Cheers!

I had to reseal the top of the A pillars which I'd only just sorted days before. To get the windscreen to seal they have to remove any sign of old silicon so they clean everything off. Did a cracking job, just had to redo the A pillars a few days later. I wouldn't fancy doing it myself and I'll tackle most jobs.

Got a D2 screen fitted by national windscreens a couple of months ago. Spoke to the guy first and he said there is no way to save the top seal so have to buy a new seal. A plain glass, seal and fitting....all in £200.

Your quote seems a bit steep to me, I did ask about a heated screen as it was a heated one that was fitted....only needed a screen for MOT as I was selling it so went for a cheap plain glass. Cant remember the exact price but i seem to think it was around 250 for the heated glass + the seal and fitting.

To be fair we are talking about Autoglass who live off the insurance companies so they’re never going to be the cheapest the same as the insuarance body shops.

What got me with autoglass last time was the bloke was doing a new transit connect for us and ****ed one of the bolts he had to undo then said it doesn’t matter the bolt isn’t needed. So i said ok take a bolt out of your transit and put it in ours or autoglass will be paying for a mechanic - he took the bolt out of his!

Try some local one man band companies? I smashed a mates front screen on his disco td5 by accident (a skirting board that was too long) and we use a guy through our work who works for himself. Can’t remember the exact prices but it was about £170 for a standard screen supplied and fitted and £230ish for the heated one. I paid for the standard and my mate made up the difference and upgraded to the heated.

Well what do you know, I went out in the yard this morning and the windscreen was cracked ;)

We normally use Autoglass but our new insurance company don't deal with them, and I can see why now! They use National Windscreens. Autoglass cost was £742 incl. VAT, National Windscreens £215 incl. VAT. I had a windscreen on my D4 a couple of years ago I think it cost the insurance about £1700!

Mine was done by Autoglass about a year and a half ago through insurance. Done over two visits as I asked them to give me a few days to deal with the stone chips along the roof front. I also prepped the window opening where their cutter had cut into the paint. As said previously, a new top seal is required.

I’d like to think a windscreen company won’t need my help and if it needs any seals they’ll do it

Ring round a few for quotes if your insurance doesn't cover windscreens, I had £700, £450, £325 & £190 to supply and fit on a D1 with a plain screen and new seal, I did ask about heated front screen for a D1 but they told me they don't make them.

It’s going through the insurance but my insurance company won’t deal with autoglass and I can see why when they’re £500 dearer than others! National Windscreens are doing it

Only passing on what I done at the time. Discos are common for rust spots going under the screen top seal. I plan to keep mine long term and the measures I took were preventative.

Thanks I'll keep an eye out while they're doing it

I wish I had done this when I had mine replaced, I'm going to end up taking it out again some time in the future to sort the rust spots properly.

I found some photos of when I done it.

Hi, My screen also needs replacing due to the dreaded leaking onto roof headliner. Have been quoted by 'Pembrokeshire Windscreens' £301.00 for screen, top trim and moulding poppers. I am happy with that. He will also ensure the seams are good.
Following that headliner recovering and door card fabric trim renewal at Cleddau Marine Upholstery and Vehicle trimmers. :).
Shortly after truck then goes for full underbody treatment and service. Busy Month but hopefully well worth it .
