Hi,

So, 6 yrs ago i sold my M reg Soft Dash classic RR, sold it for a 51 plate 2.5D & now Im now 4 yrs into owning a genuine 30th Anniversary. The dilemma is sell it for £2K - £2.5K or dry store it & re-commission it in 10 years or so ? nice soft dashes are now commanding treble that they were, just too difficult to let her go for a song.

of course it will, it's a Land Rover. I can't think of any past Land Rover that isn't now an appreciating classic.
It's only the electrical bits that would let them down, With a good stash of spare electrical bits there's no reason why you shouldn't keep one on the road for a good few years.

I don't think P38s or L322s will ever appreciate in value. Just like the Aston Martin Lagonda, too many gremlins to make them appeal to collectors. Although that said the average price of them has increased by about 20k in the last 5 years and the average price of a Ferrari 355 has gone up by 10k. So who knows, maybe the P38 will make a late flurish.

But with the way the gov't is screwing 4x4 owners and moving the goalposts for classic status, there are no reasons to keep a Landy going if you can't get a tax exempt badge for it. The average price for a P38 is 3k and I see that dropping to at least 1.5k before the end of this decade. I don't see a BMW derv ever becoming collectable either. 4.6s have a chance, but not the derv.
 
Thank you guys, my head & my heart are saying keep it but then yep in 10 yrs time what will the state of the markets be. Its a very good one, etc but the availability of parts is also a worry. There was one on the range rover register stand at the recent land rover show @ Peterborough & mine is as good (if not better but i'm biased)

If you can afford to store it and don't need the money, it is always worth a punt. It is hard to predict what the markets will do.

Agreed. My local indy told me some parts are starting to get difficult to get hold of.

On the P38, almost all the electronics can be worked around if the parts dry up, even the BECM.
 
As I've said before, the p38 ticks a lot of the future classic boxes. Last truly rover designed rangie, last live axle rangie, last ladder-framed rangie. In other words the last rangie with proper land rover dna. Future classic? IMHO, unquestionably.

Do you think they would become classics even if they have been used as a car for decades and hence have extreme mileage?
 
Mine almost has 200k on the clock. Unless something catastrophic happens to the remaining P38 reserves making it one of the last few alive it'll never be a classic. ;D

I love my P38. However, I don't personally think it will become a classic and here's why, the design of the original Classic was pretty revolutionary and certainly very distinguishable from anything else on the road. They even had one as an art exhibit in the Louvre! The P38 design is well, a bit too safe in my eyes after that and could possibly be described as a bit bland. I know they get some negative posts from P38 owners on here but I do think the L322 is more like the Classic design wise. You can recognise one from a mile away as it looks well, different from anything else on the road much like the original. I now prepare to be flamed for my comments :)

I agree the P38 will never be a classic. Doesn't help people mistake them for a Metro cab. To be honest, I doubt any modern 4x4 will become a classic.

So you think the Germanic L322 is a close representation of a British classic?
Couldn't be further in my eyes.
PS. before i get accused of having rose tinted's on, no i don't think the P38 will ever become a classic.....that's exclusive to the classic.
