I have a power loss issue with my D2.
I can go for weeks/months without a problem then it rears its head again for 2/3 weeks then goes away again.
First sign, start up not quite right then down the road in the same spot about 1.5 miles on a gradual incline the engine starts to lose power and I will manage to just get over the hill pull up let it clear its throat set off again for it to happen again (or not). Parked up all day same spot going home up a gradual incline again I lose power pull up and rev it till it regains itself and off I go most likely for it happen again this time 2/3 miles down a dual carriageway.
Its started again yesterday and the engine will become harder to start each day turning it over and over until it fires up.
I have stopped using supermarket fuel and I have added a good additive to clean injectors.
Since April 2016 I have had replaced the fuel pump the fuel filter the injector wiring loom the air filter and cleaned the mass air flow sensor.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated of what else I might try thanks in advance
 
Hi thanks for your help.
I blanked the EGR valve off with a blanking plate at the manifold connection back in 2009.
I have just checked the waste valve and there seems to be good movement with the help of a pair of grips.
Now as for the catalyst I have no idea tbh its the same exhaust on as when I purchased the car in 2009.
So I'm guessing your saying this could be past its sell by date if there is one on?
I've just seen an option to take the pressure hose from the turbo directly in to the turbo inter-cooler pressure
in valve bypassing the modulator to improve performance....I wonder if that might help?
 
So,

Have you removed the EGR? or just blanked it off at the exhaust manifold?
Have a look at the exhaust and see if the previous owner changed it to a non cat pipe, it is obvious as there will be a box on the down pipe section.
I assume you are talking about the modulator bypass ( as the defender TD5 never had the modulator). This can be done as a test, but the D2 is meant to have the modulator to run better. Modulators are cheap anyway.

Can you get it on diagnostics to record the live running data when you have a problem?

If bypassing the wastegate modulator helps it means the modulator is gone, also check fuse F2 engine bay to be ruled out, did you clean the MAP sensor(in the inlet manifold)? if not do it, and also unplug the MAF and go for a ride that way... unfortunately for this kind of fault a live data diagnostic session is compulsory
 
I blanked it off at the manifold I did not remove it and I have cleaned the MAF, however I have not cleaned the MAP I will do this next and I will check the fuse.
I will do these things you gents have suggested and get back to you both.
As for diagnostics I guess thats a trip to a garage then?....sigh

I would recommend removing the EGR completely, it is not doing any good as it is.

Diagnostics, see if you have anyone local who has a diagnostics unit like a nanocom you can use to record some driving data.

I can now tell you that the problem has hopefully been fixed.
I went to a local garage (Staffordshire 4x4) had a chat about all the problems and it was suggested the fault pointed to the injector seals. Booked me in had to wait a week and they replaced the o rings and copper washers. Collected by lunchtime and it's running like dream no problem's 4/5days in. Cheers

Let's hope it's fixed then if that was theyr's explanation cos then they dont know much about Td5s, "pushing fuel past" means injector o-ring failure which leads to fuel in the sump but no running/starting issues at all(untill the sump is not filled with fuel)...running but especially starting issues are caused by failed copper washers and in this case combustion gas gets into the fuel rail... if it's fixed that was your problem and that conclusion would have popped up after the other things were ruled out:cool:
 
No he never said that was the problem he just mentioned it in passing, I guess its just another issue sorted.
