anyone have any idea why both front fog lights on a p38 have breathers?

I might be wrong but, i'm guessing so if water gets in it will just evaporate, and so when the lamp gets hot and the air heats up it wont split the unit. BUT two whopping great pipes on each, are they really necessary?

i fancy taking them out and taping/siliconing the holes, just to get rid of some engine bay clutter.

Because when the lamps are on they get hot and the air inside them expands. If you wadded with them hot they would cool rapidly and the air would cool and contract sucking water in. Just as the wheel bearings on a boat trailer do when the boat is launched. The breathers are there to prevent this happening.

If you wadded with them

ahh ok, and you often wade your p38 ??

get what your all saying, and thats what i thought, but i dont see why every bulb/light around the car doesn't have them.

anyway trivial bulls**t.

i wont touch them. cheers

As the offical wade depth is 500mm, the Fogs would be submerged and the other lights would be above the waterline....

Deep water wading is a different matter, as modifications would need to be done to prevent nasty things happpening...

Have a look on the wheeler dealers episode where they do a P38, Ed China explains why those pipes are there and what they do and how. You can also laugh at that twit Brewer buying a car with bust air suspension!

No need for that just read post #2.

That episode was on again last night, I just couldn't watch it again, they annoyed me too much, telling me to ensure I bought the correct parts for the car, ensuring I was careful about model year chnages, then watch them fit the wrong model year parts.......and drive off with mis-matching headlamps and wrong fogs.
