As an easy accessible vehicle for me with dodgy back and pelvis issues, I was struggling to get out of Mondeo, so needed something higher to fall down out of rather than struggle up from. Saw the potential for fun in a disco, so went for it. On my 3rd now! :D

I used to have an RAC truck!
I got mine, D2 commercial, cos they're really good value compared to a 110, more comfortable and easier to work from with the rear side doors!

"Other"

I was having hallucinations that it would be the ideal vehicle for the severe winters (-25 and lots of snow) here in Bulgaria. On the face of it my D1 is the perfect vehicle 1999, V8, 2 owners from new IN GIBRALTAR i.e not a speck of rust and only 50k mls, high speck, aircon works perfectly (useful as its now 37 degC here) and came with full set of new summer and winter tyres (legal requirement here), FULL MD SH the bloody lot. In actual fact its a sack of ........ How is the steering box shot after 50k mls (nope wont adjust) ?????????? How come half the electrics dont work?? How you guys in the UK with Uk weathered cars cope i do not know!!!

As a point of interest is it useless for the severe winters here as it never starts below -15 deg C - SO ironically I end up using my Mazda MX5 MK1. So in conclusion a 20 year old automatic rear wheel drive 2 seater with 4" of ground clearance is 100,000 X better than a Disco. It has NEVER failed to get me home in the most severe weather (-30 Deg C with windchill down to -45, you have NO IDEA what that is like until you have experienced it!) where as the Diso has on every occasion failed to get me ANYWHERE in severe weather!!!

Shoulda bought a diesel :p

Since I was a kid I've wanted a land rover. I always wanted a defender but, apart from not being able to afford a decent one, they aren't really the ideal family car are they!? Anyway, at the ripe old age of nearly 50, I've just got my first land rover. It's a discovery 300 tdi ES. I've had it less than a week and I love it already. It puts a huge smile on my face every time I drive it.

Not much in them. Its more to do with the driver. There pretty much the same just wheel bases separates them really. But disco is comfy and you don't get tinnitus after driving a disco :D

Bought my 1st LR because it was cheaper than a car at the time. I paid £75 for my first LR (and that was from a LR dealer) with 12 months mot. Asking price was £100, no way was I paying that much :D

I got a Disco to complete the set, I had a Mini,Allegro,TR7 and a Series 3 Landy.
The most reliable by far.... the Allegro. The worst my Disco TD5.

:D:D:D

Because it was cheap, because my mate had one and after various other makes of 4x4 it suits my needs better, because it keeps me occupied weekends because its old and i dont mind dents and scratches, because bits for it are quite cheap....and i love it.And its a Land rover so i get to come on here and have a laugh.:D:D

Awesome post :)

Defender was too expensive, disco is more comfy, more room in the back to chuck my chainsaws and tree surgery gear, good off road, parts are cheap and plentifull, and I dont worry if it gets scratched!:)

Defender isn't better than Disco it is all about the vehicles purpose and function. A Defender is more of a 'commercial' platform, a working truck with gear ratio's and comfort to match but it leaves the Disco cold when it comes to body and function 'options'. Would I buy one as a family truck or motorway cruiser - not a chance.

I bought my Disco because of a lack of options to be honest. The Landcruiser lunched its autobox and was going to cost near £3k to fix - at 15 years old and counting I decided against. I also needed a car fast due to an upcoming show that could tow 3.5 tons and had 7 days to find one that fitted the budget. My budget was split into car purchase and then a pot for essential maintenance - the jobs I always do on a car when I get it - belts, brakes, fluids, hoses, tyres etc etc etc

The Disco came top of the available and affordable at the time but it has since gone way over budget ... way way way over budget

I bought a disco because at the time it was the cheapest way into coil sprung land rover ownership. I have since driven a defender both on and off road and I would rather spend the difference between buying a disco and a defender on keeping the disco on the road. I dont really fit in a defender and I have used the disco for several long distance trips that I couldnt see myself doing in a defender.
