Needed a truck for work when I started my business 3 years ago and a disco was a damn sight cheaper than a Hi-Lux. Plus it's british, it'll go further offroad and my Dad had a few when I was a kid and it evokes childhood memories.

Needed something to pull a horse trailer as sold horse box.
Looked at Pajero etc but Land Rover had more pulling weight than most - slowly playing into my hands.
Spares are cheaper for landies.
So decided on Disco coz it is:
1 Land Rover
2 Suits my needs, also needed to travel on m/way to work occasionally. 4 seats, 5 doors preferred. Have mud & snow capability. Defender ruled out now.
3 Looked at Range Rover but too big for where I want to go - Disco turning circle small enough plus missus had to drive it.
4 Had an understanding of them as have had Series 2s before but needed diff lock.

Why bad rep?

What has a good rep?
Landcruisers and Patrols are the 4WD of choice here in OZ and having owned a Patrol I totally understand why.
As for why bad rep - TBH I think deep down we all know the build quality on Landys is woeful compared to some of the Jap competitors. The price the dealerships charge for parts over here is ridiculous which doesnt help there cause.
Being a Proud Englishman here in OZ though I do enjoy the banter of owning a truly British Built car !!!

I always wanted a 109 s3 but have two kids and need a family car.So i wanted a disco1.Then the mrs sticks her spanner in and starts saying it looks so old (yeh whats the problem) so ended up with a 99 td5 gs manual. Nice motor but parts (wheel bearing, ace pump, aircon pump) are shocking.Nothing like the 109 i really wanted:doh:

best motor ive ever owned ! 5 door 2 seater massive boot ! perfect camper offroader.... breaks down atleast once a week, keeps me on my toes.... wouldnt part with her for the world.... keeps up with the fender off road the only difference is im comfy and warm all round winner..... :)

Well, I got mine about a week ago. first ever disco! Being an avid lover of LR's and a member of local club, I missed out on oil stained driveways, shed full of rust treatment, welding skills and panel beating. Owning a Freelander Td4 doesnt need these!!! But having just aquired a V8 Auto and spending last week or 2 reading the disco section I'm loving it, got the usual issues, cruise control, sun roofs leak, saggy liner and rusty mud flap brackets, but looking forward to getting stuck in and building a nice little motor for the mud stuff. Look forward to the New Year of stripping, treating, lifting, painted and bolting!!!

Used to own a izuzu trooper until someone crashed into me 2-1/2 years ago and the insurance had to get me a brand new discovery 3 to give me as I'd stated that I needed something equivalent for towing a large trailer (they offered me a vitara first) when it went back after 7 weeks of having it I was gutted my car was written off but couldn't really afford a discovery 3 so test drove a few discovery 2's and decided to go land rover. Had quite a few 4x4's in the past and it's by far the best upto date apart from the brand new discovery 3 obviously
