Of course the guys commenting on the MG-ROVER site are slightly biased, but I have to rate the little engine in my Freelander and MGF VVC. Despite having hgf on the hippo, I did all the work from scratch, runs better than it ever did.

Iknow MHM you have had your fill of the kv6 but the 1.8k gets the thumbs up from me
 
Does make life exciting when you got full load of people and luggage and trying to get up a hill at speed !. Probably ok but 1.8 too weedy for Flndr with resultant probs.
 
v6 is ok at that - providing it runnin ok - it fair whizzes up hills. about 3 to the gall - but it does go

That has got to be scary. My V6 used to lap it up. Full load, up hill towing an articulated lorry with trailer full of JCB bits, easy crusing at 80mph. She was powerful. More powerful than Mings rocket ship. More powerful than a powerful thing that won a competition for being powerful.
I miss her sometimes :rolleyes:

Taking all points into consideration but 1.8k shouldnt be knocked until you have tried it. Are you talking from experience or hearsay? What are the problems with the engine you speak of? Yes hgf is common but then so do a lot of other car manufacturers have weak points.

My 1.8 hippo had 750kg lead (Pb) in the back and no probs on steep inclines. mind you sat on the deck with the weight.

LRM did a re-working of the valve and ports on the head of the 1.8k, in fact this can be done routinely in most engineering shops, and turned out to be much better for power than original castings. The original engine never achieved its full potential.

The only time someone should buy a diesel hippo is for torque if they do alot of towing trailers or horse boxes. Petrol hippo will tow one horse and horsebox but not two horses. Thats when I would recommend a diesel but they aint half slow.

As MHM said KV6 was great on power but gas guzzler, not to mention only came in automatic transmission.
 
surely you cannot disagree that the Hippoo has several in-built design faults?

As for "but then so do a lot of other car manufacturers have weak points" - so what? I aint interested in them and "two wrongs dont make a right". To say that anecdotal evidence is unfounded is just sticking ya head in the sand.

To be told after ya darling puupy has savaged ya baby that "all wild dogs attack humans too" aint any consolation!

oh! - and by-the-way - the Hippoo is one of the best looking 4x4's on the road with better than average off-road performance - but IT STILL HAS FAULTS!
 
you decribe it as weak points... i've had all sort of cars over the years and none have been any thing like the gaylander. from cheap 30quid bangers to 70 grand, go faster mobiles and none are this bad.. its just plain bad

I had a hippo with the KV6 engine and it blew a head gasket at 30k miles. Terrible for a V6 powerplant. I hear tales of lots of people suffering now. I also had an MG TF with the 1.8 litre K series engine. It always sounded rough, didn't have a lot of get up and go for 160bhp and the MG TF also suffers from terrible reliability.
So, yes, I speak from experience, the K series engine is pants. The K series engine is also the only engine I know of with 100% failure rate.:eek:
 
Wife's 1.8 does the job is was bought for. That being taking her to and from work down 5 odd miles of single lane high hedged lanes that flood in spring and autumn and occasionally freeze during winter. During the summer the lost tourists tend to pull over when a 4x4 is heading towards them at high speed (bonus if you live in Devon!). Always serviced at main dealer and on 2nd engine and total of 3 HGF. I use it when needing to cart big stuff in back and that's when it struggles, but does just about the job. For some reason we still like it but aware of shortcomings in power and build qulality. Still the the ickle engine means its easy to work on when (and it will) go wrong)
