hi all, on a recent trip i had trvelled 40 miles when engine started to run rough, then it clattered put out losads of white smoke and died, it woulnt restart for 15 minutes it did this every few miles about 6 times. then travelled 60 miles before repeating. its seems ok when cold and injectors are fine when wires are removed but once hot it runs rough and one injector doesnt seem to work when i take off wire to check. i changed fuel filter and pretty sure its not turbo. my mechanic thinks it should not die if its just an injector problem. anybody got any ideas whats wrong here.

The injectors are known to start messing about when hot as a precursor to them failing completely.
I would put a few good doses of a decent injector cleaner through it.
I put a cleaner in my TD4 every month, hopefully prolonging injector life.

Have you replaced the injector loom with the newer upgraded one? Its s known problem that causes this sort of problem.

checked the loom for continuity and its good, getting dodgy injector checked out tomorrow, hopefully it will prove to be the problem but my mechanic is not sure if one non functioning injector would cause jeepto ncut out on the road and not restart till cooled down for 15

Freelander injectors failing don't normally cause them to cut out and not restart for a while. But I couldn't tell you about the Jeep as I don't know much about them ;)

Hence suggestion to replace with the upgraded injector loom. This is a known problem that would have the capability of cutting the engine and manifests itself differently as engine temps change. Its also difficult to test as connections change as you disturb the wiring. Its a quick, simple fix/upgrade that costs about £70.

If your mechanic refers to your Land Rover as a piece of Merkin crap - you desperately need a new mechanic!!!!
