There is snow and then there is ice (hard packed snow) the only answer to the second is chains (or studs when allowed) . The studs also wear fast on bitumen whenits not deep snow. I run bfg MT 285/75r16 work for me including pulling artics (5 in last 2 days) work well in deep snow as well .

i run the 265 version on my 110 double cab , must say to begin with was not over impressed (first time in snow in a 110). but now i'm used to the new truck i'm well impressed , when under heavy load ie; pulling hard or biting under high revs they seem to rip through the snow/snowpacked ice and braking too.

I have the Insa Saharas muddies on my 90, There great in the snow even pulled a mini bus full of disbled kids up a steep icey hill and out of the scheme wi. There an awful lot better the the AT i had on last year. Even the AT on my old 110CSW wernt that bad in the snow, Its the hard ice thats a problem. Never had any probs with sliding with them and i live in sunny scotland

Real winter tires are made of a softer rubber and therefore wear down very quickly in warmer weather. But, real winter tires work well on ice too. In the Nordic countries it is a legal requirement to fit winter tires. With good winter tires, any normal 2 wheel drive car will manage fine as long as it does not bottom out and is driven correctly. Studs help on ice but they are noisy.
When living in Scandinavia I never had a problem, even in my rear wheel drive BMW. That had Nokian friction winter tires. Over there people have two sets of wheels... typically alloys with the summer tires and a set of steel wheels with the winter tires. The winter set go on aropund November and come off in March/ April, depending on the weather of course.
One problem with winter tires is that, once they age, the rubber hardens and they lose a lot of their grip. I think after approx. 4 years they should be replaced, possibly a bit more these days.

Cooper st's ,the muts nuts in snow n ice, they also have the availability to fit studs to the outer edges if you need to,but to be honest i haven't spun a wheel all winter
