Hi guys,

I know it's been asked before, and believe me I've searched and searched, but I haven't been able to find the answer to my question.

On a 1996 300tdi Defender, which oil seal should you use inside the stub axle, between the stub axle bearings and the threaded end of the stub axle.

I've been sent part number FTC5268 and FTC840 but I'm confused which one I should use and which orientation.

In the first diagram you sent it shows FTC840. Incidentally, that's the same part number which was in the old stub axle. However, the tech support at paddock spares says to use FTC5268

just to be clear (as it's been a long day!) are you talking about the front stub axle the wheel bolts on to or the swivel pin housing stub axle?

It looks like FTC840 goes inside the stub axle. I just can't work out where FTC5268 goes. I think maybe it goes on the opposite side of the bearing?

yes, then its deffo FTC840. i think the grooved side goes over the bearing but it's been a while!

This image suggests that it's FTC5268:

However, this image, and the images you previously shared, show it as FTC840:

acoording to lrdirect the "FTC5268 fits a 24 spline axle in Land Rover Defender Discovery 1 & Range Rover Classic 92-94". must be a spline quantity thing!

notice there is a key-way on the top one and a flat on the second one. which one have you got?

It is a 24 spline half shaft.
FTC5268 is described as an inner oil seal, and FTC840 is described as an outer oil seal.
