scrap the ford and then for 500 quid, which is not much over scrap value buy yourself a ****ty 200tdi disco and you will love it, abuse it, learn from it and then when the mot runs out you can tare the heart out of it and put it in a v8 110 which you have picked up cheap because the last owner couldnt afford to run it! :)

Wishful thinking... don't have the space to do so. But if i did.... i could then fit the V8 into something small and proper fun - Beach buggy any1?

However, My mate has a barn i could borrow....hmmmm !!!

From what you're saying, and I've read the whole thread, a Discovery is the better option for you.

And you need to get this idea out of your head that a Defender is much easier to work on and much more robust than a Discovery. The earlier shape Discovery upto about 1998 is largely the same thing, as has been said before.

Your top job is to look for rust, my 1998 300 tdi Disco I bought with 202k miles on it, it had a full Land Rover service history,it has 29 Landy dealer stamps, with full invoices and paperwork for every service it had,it was even MOT and serviced by Land Rover the day before it was put up for sale, and I snapped it up.
But I bought it more because the structural steel work, i.e chassis, out riggers, sills, boot floor, was like new,I have had other Discos so knew where to look, and there are good ones out there, you just have to keep looking, you reckon you got time to wait,I got in the habit of looking on Ebay every day,and you get to know whats new and been hanging around, when this one popped up,because I was on regular I spotted it not long after it was listed
What I am trying to say in my opinion,a well looked after high mile one if looked after, will be a better bet than a low mile rusty bugger.
Land Rovers seem to be made of very tasty metal, tin worm love Landy metal.........

That scares me!! So besides the obvious costs of fuel, road tax, insurance, what are the other costs involved of running an old landy and what are the prices? I.e. Welding !!!

Decided to swerve the ebay one and up my budget to get sumfin bit newer.
