A Defender 110 is an excellent all round work and play vehicle, easy to maintain and holds the residual value; a good one will cost more than you think.
You can find a decent Discovery much cheaper than the 110 as long as you are cautious with your selection and look carefully for corrosion. Most simple engine is the 200tdi; the 300tdi also good but with the cam belt sting to your pocket if it snaps. If you buy one, change the belt immediately. The TD5 is basically a very good engine but spoiled by the drive by wire technolology which can fool the best of us.
The choice is yours really but it would help if you found a fellow Landrover zone buddy to look with you at anything you short -list, before spending your hard earned cash.

Like the sound of going with some one who knows more about them than me! Any sections on this website just for that?

My situation is I'm running my Mondeo till the wheels fall off/next big breakage/ its MOT on the 14th December. After that its being scrapped/sold as spares on eBay. I plan to have a replacement vehicle by that date or early January. Im based in the North West near Knutsford services on the M6. Is there anyone about who would be interetsed.

In the mean time - any Buying guides on what to look out for when purchasing? Unfortunatley my budget is on the low side so looking for something that requires abit of work but nothing unreversable (i.e. badly serviced).

name the price you is willing to spend. then they can bracket the year and model disco for you, as well as a defender. set a top price and go from there. ie 8500, but would like to get it for 7500

I have 10k at my limit and have seen some nice csw 110 td5 in the 6900 range with 120 k miles

please dont laugh to hard but only got around 5k as we speak :(

The knackered mondeo kind of became knackered with little warning haha and i cant afford to be without a car for too long. I can get a small amount of finance but would prefer not too however my 21st is on Crimbo eve so will hopefully get a bit of cash over that and crimbo to add to it. So basically is 5k + abit !

There are loads of nice cars at above 6/7K mark so im semi tempted to buy a volvo or something or spend abit on the mondeo to get it through its MOT run it for a few months and meanwhile safe an grand or so and get something better !

5k is loads and will get yu a late td5 disco or a late 300tdi defender possibly a td5 110 but yu'd have to search long and hard for that.

tbh i've looked at discos and defender and for some reason a defender at 100k doesn't bother me as much as a disco at 100k? I'm thinking this because i know parts are cheap and easy to fit in a defender to keep it on the road up to 250k with an engine rebuild at around the 150k mark. Is that a correct thought

my disco is on 204k and still going forget mileage and go on condition landies aren't like other cars..

What do you mean ?

Theyre agricultural a bit like tractors and designed to take a lot of abuse. A landy that has done 200k and been loving ly owned by a diy mechanic wil be in better condition than a 50k landy that's been thrashed at a P&P site every weekend.

So forget mileage and check the condition of the car view loads and don't junp at the first one that takes yaa fancy. Search on here plenty of threads and tips on what to look for.

With proper care on a diesel 300kor more is due able, But its the maintenance, especially the air oil/filters and cooling system. Most do not do a weekly check as should as they drive to few miles to detect a problem starting to develope until it's to late.

Like I read in july and august- we are on the m were ever it goes and my temp gauge says it's hot do I have a problem? more cooling problem when they go on holiday, because they drive such short distances daily and the motor dosen't get to operating temp's

haha love the tractor comment - im the proud owner of a 1955 'little grey fergie' and I love it.

Ill start doing some research then! Im borrowing a TD5 90 off a mate whilst i look after his dogs in a few weeks so will give it a test drive and see if its Defender or a more refined disco thats taking my fancy!

Cheers for your help :)

If you like to 90 then you'll like the 110 as longer wheel base will give a smother ride on the road and have lots of room for tool and stuff:D

scrap the ford and then for 500 quid, which is not much over scrap value buy yourself a ****ty 200tdi disco and you will love it, abuse it, learn from it and then when the mot runs out you can tare the heart out of it and put it in a v8 110 which you have picked up cheap because the last owner couldnt afford to run it! :)

Can send you a Defender buyers guide if you pm me your email address

Have shared a few times - but too large to post on here
