The low shift button on my L322 doesn't work. There's no light on the dash or anything, so I'm trying to track the electrics.
Apparently there are 2 types of gearbox GM5 and ZF
How do I tell which I have?

If you said what year and engine peeps maybe able to help.

8 speed box?

J

Best way is as stated in thread no1 on the RR section

Let us know Manufacturer Year, model, engine and presuming it’s standard someone will have answer

Most likely the GM box. Worst of the lot I’m afraid. Metal it’s made of is often compared to the consistency of hard cheese but okay if new.

Your guess is as good as mine as i am not up to speed on l322 wiring but recall problems with the shift motor, i believe it can be taken of and checked on the bench.

If you press the button while in D. Does it ask you to select neutral?
If no possible button.
If yes but no buzz from under the motor check for voltage there if so the high/low motor on the back of transferbox needs investigating.

No, if I select when in drive it doesn't do anything and doesn't say to select neutral.
I've also tried it in neutral with my foot on the brake and it does absolutely nothing. No lights no sounds no nothing.

3.0 diseasel with the 5spd GM box

A match made on Tinder, or hell maybe heaven..

Depends..
Which is best engine/box match in your opinion?
reason I ask is I'm toying with the idea of getting an L322, can't decide whether to get a 4.2SC
or 5.0SC.

Sounds like the switch may be dead does your hdc button to the left of it work?

The GB was fine in the much lighter X5, unfortunately the girth of the L322 was too much, coupled with "seal for life", it was a death sentence from the factory.

It was a common failure point int eh X5 too

My personal favourite is the 4.2S/C with the 6spd 6hp26 ZF box a pretty bombproof combo
The 5.0's aren't that bad if they've been looked after.

The chain guides fitted on these engines it's just a matter of time before they need doing. Other then the chain guides there's not much that goes wrong with the 5.0's. Well, the Supercharger torsion isolator wears but they're easy enough and cheap enough to repair yourself
The upside of one of them over the 4.2 is the 25% increase in power, sharper throttle response, and better economy along with the more modern interior and 6 piston brakes.

But the Former tends to be more reliable in the long run.

They seem to be okay in an L322 until they age.
What’s the life expectancy of a GM unit in an 3.0d straight 6? - 80,000m? Not particularly robust but one new box should see most owners through
