Can anyone please help!

I am looking to spend around £5000-6000 on a Defender 90 to off road and cherish. The only trouble is i havent a clue which to go for 200tdi, 300tdi, v8..... etc.

Could anyone please give me a run down on whats what, good and bad points on each?

I would really really like a v8 but again i wouldnt know if i was making the right choice!!

Im will be adding all the usual features such as Whinch, mud tyres, etc!

Looking forward to any help,

Scott

For 6 grand you can get a very tidy 300TDi AND buy lift kit, rock/tree sliders, steering guard, sump guards etc ;)

Thanks mate! Would you say the 300tdi is strong and reliable enough to cope with some serious off-road activities?

2.5N/A
A very reliable, solid engine that will run for ever, but not as economic as later engines and very slow on hills (no turbo). Expect about 27 to 28MPG.

2.5TD
Perhaps the most troublesome land rover engine to date. Later versions were alright but still not reliable. Generally speaking they are ready to self destruct at any moment but there are some well looked after ones out there which will be alright. Still a good decision to avoid this engine though.

200TDi
Exceptionally trusted, reliable and powerful diesel engine that can return around 30MPG+ and relatively easy to work on. Will run on next to anything flammable just as long as it's mixed with something else to make the same consistency as diesel (for lubrication of injection pump)

300TDi
Similar to the 200TDi, but is actually slightly slower. It's also easier to work on with regards to replacing the timing belt etc. but if you're going to have a Land Rover that people want to steal, a Defender with this engine is the one unfortunately. They are very desirable.

Rover V8
Not too clued up about these engines but a 200 or 300 TDi will be able to achieve similar speeds on motor-way runs, (even my 2.5N/A can do 75 to 78MPH) The V8 sounds good, drinks a lot of fuel, but you'll never get one to accelerate past 100MPH, they're jst not designed for it.

You're best trying to get something with a decent chassis, maybe even galvanised for your budget, with a solid engine. You'll definitely be able to get something good for that kind of money.

If you go for a V8 make sure you get one with an LPG conversion because at 9 to 18mpg you're gonna spend a lot of money on petrol.

Pos If you can get 28mpg out of a n/a traccta your a fooking miracle worker. try 25mpg max!!

v8....if you want lots of grunt on climbs, but a 200 tdi is good allrounder, however i swaped to v8 from diesel as i like the instant power and on a long inciline you just press the pedal to get power, instead of slipping the clutch to spin up the turbo.....also if you drive it alot a lpg conversion makes sense.....

but the v8s do need a bit of prep for water.....perhaps try driving a few different ones to help you choose...

i would never go back to a diesel now....

200tdi faster than 300!!facts please young man...o and who the hell would accelerate to over 100mph??i'm sure defenders are limited anyway to around 80 for safety?mybe i'm wrong there

Seen a few nutters in defenders flying past me when I've bin tootling along at 75/80 in the disco. The only limiter LR fitted to the defender, was to design it to have the aerodynamics of a fooking breezeblock.

Did 95 in me V8 hybrid down the M42 once. Had dodgy steering damper - more frightening than doing 140 down the Autobahn in me Escort GTi...

fook! glad i wasnt th car infront of you!!if you needed to brake we'd b chattin in LZ heaven!

Ere I'm a bit lost, UI was lookin for the most commonly asked question?? What? I've found it? Great stuff. Shouldn't we limit the response to people who've actually owned a particular engine? Otherwise we might as well just go and grab a few magazines and quote what it says in there.

ah i thought they had top speed of 87..any one actually gone FASTER than that??

They probably were. But you know what landy owners are like they do like to tweek em. & I suppose it's not a big job to fit a tuned engine or even a 3.9 engine in one   That said they may not have been V8's they may have had tdi's or even non LR diesels in them I just know they were shifting faster than me at 75/80mph.
