Hi, I’m looking to get into Range Rover ownership in the new year and was looking for some advice on what to look for, especially on the engine side.
Financially I would be looking at 06/07 diesels so do I go for a last of the line BMW straight 6 or an early Ford V8?
Any help would be gratefully received.
I apologise if there is a sticky somewhere with this info on it but I couldn’t see it.

Personally speaking. I would stay away from an L322.

if you are new to RR world get yourself a very sorted P38 2001 Thor, put it on a multipoint LPG, get yourself a nanocom for diagnostics and cut your teeth from there.

Parts are very reasonable on the P38, there are sorted examples out there, but you will need to do maintenance on any RR. its not an SUV, its a 4x4 with luxury capability. if you don't spanner yourself it will eat your face. After the P38, which is complex, they started to get very complex. no matter what RR you decide on, leave a budget for your own diagnostics. your local garage will not have RR specific

I personally love p38s but I think you want an l322. They do appeal to different folks. The p38 is owned by 2 types enthusiasts and older folks.
L322 are entering a period of universal ownership. Any one can own one if they wish. This is great but maintenance is very very very often ignored. 06 07 is the critical age tbh......to expensive to run but not worth maintaining properly. Example...the guy that sprays cars near me has a supercharged rr.... Nothing seems to work but the engine. Will he fix it? No.
PS the supercharged is a great engine very durable
Caveat emptor

That's the problem with the L322 entering the period of universal ownership.

Lots of examples out there of people who want the marque but don't put the money into maintenance.. the engine block is sound if maintained it's just everything else around it that will cause headaches and eat your wallet.

Thanks you all for taking the time to reply.
I currently own a Jaguar XJ (X350) and do all my own spannering so I am used to working on complex vehicles.
I’ll start looking in the new year and I’ll let you know what I end up with.
Thanks again

Jag to a Range Rover..

Well you didn't say you are a masochist..

That's different
Maybe I should explain myself
I do a bit of clay pigeon shooting all year round and pheasant shooting in the winter and until recently I had a cheap little Suzuki 4x4 that did duty as a weekend truck.
My idea was to combine the luxury and mileage eating characteristics of the Jag with something I could use on winter weekends as well.

Then why not go for a permanent 4x4 car or better still the capacity of an estate & save yourself grief & expense ?

Ok you’ve talked me out of it.
I’ll look at getting another cheap 4x4.
Just one question:
Every other forum I’ve used in the past and the two I regularly use now actively encourage new members to own and enjoy the marque that the forum represents.
Every answer to my post gave negative opinions on Range Rover ownership, which I think is a shame as I think these forums should be used as a positive platform for the vehicles they represent.
That said, I appreciate your honesty.
Thank you.

If you want a cheap 4x4 with luxury, go for a P38. This forum is more for p38 and classic owners and you will get some good advice on P38 ownership

There is another forum out there for the L332 or Fullfatrr.com . The L322 is a great vehicle and far superior to the p38, but does cost more to run and maintain as it is far more complex.

All RR are good if properly maintained, but if you get one which has been abused it will be a money pit

Dont get me wrong. I love range rovers, i'm currently down to three now (P38 and two classics). When our new bundle of joy arrived last december, it was a realisation that the boxster had to go. having two 2 seat cars and the P38 as the only 4 door 4 seat car was impractical. i did consider getting a newer RR to add to the historic timeline collection, however, the L322 is not something that i afford bags of time to trouble shooting, I could have got a sport, but would probably eaten my face so ended up getting a Porsche Cayenne 4.5S which i enjoy smoking around in. However its an SUV, not permenant 4x4. the P38 i have had for nearly 7 years and have done in that time pretty much everything as routine maintenance, its only left me stranded once due to a failed water pump.

With the P38, there's nothing i could replace it for an newer RR? what will it give me apart from expensive headaches to gain what a, newer digit on the reg plate ? i also take comfort in the fact that the wife uses it as the baby carrier and if anything hits it, the likelihood of walking away are very high. Its an awesome car for towing heavy loads, very offroad capable. very. And with everything being done and on LPG its very low cost in maintenance. For example, when number 7 cyclinder leaked back in march i spent probably all of 500 in parts in doing the HG's and that was replacing every nut and bolt removed, new pulley etc. I also have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme for it. New Tyres all round, new discs and pads all round, Heater Matrix replaced (courtesy of Martyn) new viscous fan, new water pump, Airbags on Gen II arnotts (when they had the lifetime warranty) new o2 sensors, new cat, new rear boxes, it sails through an MOT every time. personally if i had an L322 i'd always be freaking out that the gearbox/steering column/ electrics would go on the fritz.

Sure, there are owners that have not had a problem with theirs, but as pointed out earlier, the L322's are coming into the affordable bracket and that means people want them for the marque nd not to throw money at, so things that need doing will be ignored and passed on the next 'sucker' on the log book.

Thie thing is with the RR its a highly capable off road vehicle with luxury facilities, its not a highly luxury vehicle with off road facility. These *are* complex permenant 4 wheel drive vehicle and need to be maintained as such and newer ones are becoming more and more complex. A RR getting stuck off the tarmac is more likely going to be the drivers offroad skills. Its not like an X5 where flat damp grass will cripple it. The P38 is know as the last the last of the proper Range Rovers for good reason and good examples are going up in value. Me, i'm loathed to replace it as there's nothing to replace it with.

We're realists here on LZ we read and help each other out on the problems we encounter. A couple of angelic people on this very forum have used their own time, effort and energy and gone out of their way to help me. Sure, if you want a newer RR go for it, join the melee, we'll all be here if/when something needs work.

Just go into it with your eyes wide open.

Get a L322 .......great car and personally I prefer the 3.0TD6 though known for a weak gearbox , budget for a gearbox rebuild (circa £3000 ) and you wont go wrong , I would avoid the TD V8 , it has too many issues engine wise.
The P38 has its own issues........and its old and looks it too now

I’ll look at getting another cheap 4x4.

I would look at a discovery td5 for a cheap 4x4 it is good on road or off road , cheap parts, and there is also help here when it goes wrong
I think on here you would be given a negative opinion on any mark of newer 4x4 not just Land rover products

Well over the last 30 years having had two classics (and a mig welder) and then a p38 for the last nine years, had this l322 td6 for couple of months now and yes it was cheap (do all my own work) when I`m not tinkering with it sort it out, got to say being behind the wheel of it is a very nice place to be. Just my take on it.

If you've got the patience, money , time and mostly enthusiasm. You can own anything you want. But passion is priceless!! Good luck in whatever you buy!!;)

IV got a p38 and discovery 2 td5 both good motors cheap and easy to fix the wife runs about in the td5 and weve taken it on shorts trips to belgium not ready for longer trips there landrovers lol
