Hi there,
Iv been into landys for ages but only just have the chance to get one. I'm after a 90 preferrably but a 110 would do! I'm stuck on which engine to go for, I only have a budget of about 2k so the td seems to be the most available option. But iv read that the td is abit rubbish and not made aswell as the 200tdi?
Can anyone offer their opinion to help me out! Cheers!

get a td with a knackered engine and fit a 200tdi into it. Happy Days :)

Is that do-able within the 2k? How much are we looking at for an engine? A disco auto engine is best isn't it? More power ;-) does the td box fit?

have a look in the defender section theres a sticky thread at the top with a very good description.

Later disco (300tdi) auto engines were more powerful but you can easily tweak the 200 & 300 tdi to get a bit more out of them.

Look out for a scrapped 200tdi which should cost less than £500 and scrap or sell the rest as parts depending on condition you should get a few quid back. Leaves you 1.5k to get a td with knackered lump :)
 
For £2k you'll get a rusting, shot to **** heap whatever engine it might have in it.

Honestly, you'll be very, very lucky to find anything worth having for that. Everyone will have stories of the mint condition, 300Tdi Defender they picked up for 200 knicker and a quick one off the wrist, but unless by a stroke of luck you find a total eeyjut who hasn't a clue what they're selling and you are smart enough to know EXACTLY what you are looking at and where to find serious fault you really won't find a 90/110/Defender worth **** for that price.

Now, Disco you get a lot of for that kind of money. ;)
 
Disco eyyy!? I'm listening! Haha I thaught discos were awfuly unreliable rust buckets? And defenders were slightly better.
No chance you will find a 300tdi for 2k! Can only just find a td that is rust riddled! To be honest I don't mind doing work to them, as long as it dosent cost a bomb. Welding and stuff is all good. I might consult the overdraft and push to 3k..

they are all similar for reliability as they run the same engine but defenders are a bit more basic inside so you dont get the electrical gremlins.

another thing you might want to consider is insurance a depender for some strange reason seems to be cheaper to insure than a disco.
 
£3k you might just find something worth having, just!

About the only reason a Defender is better then a Disco (let's not get into 'break over', 'approach' and 'departure' angles, how often do you actually take them to those extremes?) is it will hold it's value and most of the body work is ali' not steel.

Look after floors, doors and inner wings on a Disco and they're fine. The rest, drivetrain, suspension etc is so similar on both that it makes no odds and other than 'Defender qudos' you get just as capable a vehicle.

Out of the pair of them? I'd have a Series! ;)
 
Wel that is one if the reasons for me getting a defender! I'm 19 and it's really cheap!
Hmmm..Might have to do that overdraft then :-(
Just had a look and discos are dirt cheap! And abit nicer inside, but as you say, more to go wrong!
 
Some 90s & 110s will have power steering.

I've had a bunch of Series motors with an upholstered paracetomol for a steering wheel & it's not bothered me. A bit of hard work when parking never hurt anyone! ;)
 
hahaa 3k is definately the way forward! you get so much more for your money. im guna go 200tdi because i dont like those stupid all in one turbo-manifolds.. much preferr the t25 on the 200 i believe you can upgrade to a t28 aswel?

im used to the soft floaty pansy steering in the merc 190 i have and am selling! i cant have such a leap!

another topic iv been meaning to ask about... welded diffs?? loads of my mates drift and have high power jap cars with welded diffs and manage fine on the road. anyone done it on the landys? only rear diff mind!

Wot the FAAARK is the point in that? For a start it's permanent 4WD, I'm guessing yer puff mates have rear wheel drive pansy cars and watch way too many films called things like "Too gay, too angry with me Mum".

Easiest way is to weld a small plate onto the rear crossmember that has the words "Blowjobs a tenner" engraved onto it. That'll get you sorted. ;)
 
No they are 2 wheel drive, 1 on the front and 1 on the back. As soon as 1 wheel slips on open diff puts all the power to that wheel so the wheel that isn't spinning has no power to it. Right when you need it! Hence why people fit air lockers and locking diffs. The diff lock only locks the centre transferr box dosent it?

No you thick prick they are 4wd hence the term 4x4. Drive is transmitted equally to all 4 wheels. Yes when on icy roads or slippery surfaces, it is possible to spin a wheel or even a wheel on each axle. But that does not change the fact that for 99% of the time equal amounts of drive is transmitted to all 4 wheels. :mad:
