I want to buy a spare CV joint for my 1989 Defender 110, but there are two kinds of CV joints available; a 23 spline and a 32 spline. Without physically examining the old CV joints, how can i determine which ones i need? I am 10,000kms away from the vehicle, so looking at the old ones is impossible.

I bought one from MM 4x4 a few months back, they used my chassis number to determine which one it was.

I had to replacemy cv joint. Went to Lovell landrovers. I have a 1996 defender and it turns out it has disco axels on it. So find the axel number and give that to the place you are going to get the cv joint from.

Well, it looks like there is no solution to determining what CV joint in advance for my Defender. It turns out that during the manufacturing, Land Rover would install whatever axle they had in inventory with absolutely no rational between whether it was a 23 or a 33 spline CV joint. Amazing. So there are only two ways to figure out what you have on your vehicle. 1) get the serial number of the axle and then check it against the LR Parts Manual. or 2) pull out the existing CV joint and count the spline.
Amazing.
