Hi,
My work on the Landy has started, everything I touch is seized solid. ( I assume that is par for the course ).

Where is the best place to buy parts from?

At the moment I have found a couple of suppliers but don't seem to have the things I want, such as a transfer box rear seal kit, a replacement lock nut.....

I’m on first name terms with the counter staff at Rimmers - Land Rovers :eek: I’m thinking of just having my salary paid to them.
 
Ebay, but you do need to know what you are buying so a part number is essential.

Problem with most of the suppliers is to get free p+p you have to spend at least 50 quid.

Cheap is not always best, Britpart can be okay but again this varies with the part number.

I don't know if you've noticed, but they've added a Parts by Model search on the website now. A very good improvement to their site!
 
Lots of good suppliers. Many have an ebay shop which makes it convenient - but if you then find the part on their own site, it's sometimes little cheaper, or vice versa.
I have a few favourites, many of which are listed above, that I always try to go back to - because I know the price is fair, I know they have stock when they say they have stock and I know they'll ship promptly.

If it's metalwork you need, I find Home - YRM Metal Solutions (yrmit.co.uk) and SP PANELS- Body panel Specialists (sp-4x4.com) are both good. Been happy with everything I've had from either of them.
 
I have tended to favour Island 4x4 for the past few years.
Usually very competitive on prices and as long as you spend over £50 (exc VAT), postage is free. If ordering a small quantity of parts and I am under that I tend to add a couple filters, misc items etc to make up the balance.
 
Just be aware, if your land rover is a bitsa like mine, you will find many of the parts difficult to guess what they are.

I just replaced my brake calipers. The right hand side was stuck and I had to cut it in half to get the screws out. When I got them out they were a course thread - where I had ordered the later metric which were a fine thread. So I had to order the course ones to replace them.

The other side came off easy. When putting them back on the side that was difficult to get them off, they torqued up no problem. I then fitted the other side and they wouldn't torque and stripped the thread. On further investigation the ones that came out of that side were fine thread - which had previous been fitted into the coarse thread!!!!! I ended up having to helicoil them.

So when you look for part numbers, don't be surprised if you end up with an episode of "Tales of the unexpected ".

Also it may be worth looking for a local independent parts supplier. I have found one and they are very helpful. I always try to call the day before to make sure they have the parts in, otherwise they will order them in to collect the next day.

Just remember, if your truck is like mine, it may have been assembled by Seized, Stuck & Cobbledtogether Ltd.

@Safetyspice which part of wilts are you in?
Some good LR shops around,you just go in give them the list & let them have the hassle off ordering ;)
Plus as they normally get shipments in daily P&P is normally knocked off
I live near Devizes, I am looking for a company that will steam clean the under side, I think I have half of Lancashire under it(previous owners area)

I have already come across, Seized Solid and Rounded Off, starting to see evidence of Bodge It and Scarper Ltd, LOL

It's one of my likes of my landrover that they are just a big box of meccano, but it's a problem when you never know what the PO has done - and with them being easy to work on, any old bodging might have gone on. "Some" bodging is OK - it's not safety related - but different hubs therefore with different caliper threads and the wrong bolts on one side - sends shivers down my spine. The moment that bolt didn't go in, you would expect the PO to stop and check. But no, let's just use a breaker bar to wind it in. FFS.

I’m Swindon side. Don’t know any one who does steam cleaning. I normally pop to the local garage on an evening if I have to remove mud

@resto_d1 you remember any good landy shops Devizes/Chippenham way?

I started by taking a look at the handbrake as it was sticking on, well studs span in the TB bell housing, then found bolts instead of clevis pins, missing spacers etc, etc, so ended up taking to decision to strip out the whole of the hand brake system and completely refurbishing it, I am now just checking the other safety critical systems before I take it on the road, it is killing has as it holds a current MOT, but still not until, I am satisfied its safe..
