When the prototypes of the Discovery 1 were first seen on the road the pundits declared it a lemon that would not sell, and was to be the end of Land Rover. It went on to be the best selling 4x4. Ditto the first Freelander. Both very successful in their respective markets. I suspect Land Rover know what they can sell, and equally important will be allowed to sell by the bureaucrats. But this ever more complicated trend is not just Land Rover, it effects all car makers, because that is what new car buyers demand. Indeed not just cars. I can remember when I could mend my own television, buying circuit details and parts from a magazine advert. But now I notice my new vacuum cleaner is specifically designed so I can not mend it. And my son can not understand why I should want to mend my own car. Its the future, even if we don't like it.

Don't think you will get a slating.... your opinion is your opinion... however I do disagree.

The trend that LR is following to moving inexorably deeper into the "experts only" direction whereby repairing a dmaaged landy in the field is getting more and more difficult. LR vehicles are renowned for being serviceable anywhere and everywhere. When you are producung vehicles and labelling them as the best off road oand overland solution, equipping them with so much electronics that it takes a space shuttle engineer to change a bulb is, in my opinion, a move in the wrong direction.

+1!

The Japanese started the trend of 'engine-out' in a workshop to work on them, it's something I really don't want to see any more of with the LR defender line.

I completely agree that electronics are making it difficult to repair in the field or anywhere else for that matter but due to EU legislation, all cars have to meet certain CO2 emission levels and unfortunately the only way to do this is with electronics. It's impossible (as far as i know - presumably they would have done it if it wasn't...) to have an engine without electronic control producing the performance needed for a Defender to do what it does whilst still being within the regulations. If the defender doesn't meet these regulations then it can't exist so unfortunately its a necessary evil :/

The regulations are not binding! There's nothing to stop anyone or anything following their stupid rules!
The only country that 'plays by the rules' is Britain! The rest just ignore them, as guess what, nothing happens if you go your own way!
CO2 emission's are a con job right from the start, just like cap and trade etc.

What a lot of people don't understand is that the blueprint for Asian goods from 'the workshop of the world' - China will result in massive price increases as their middle-class grows and grows.
When that happens the people who have been inured to cheap crap that requires replacing every 5 months will soon find it's unavailable.
Folks who can mend their own vehicle via a locally sourced parts supply etc will be unaffected :)
Already there is an example of this. Jap parts are good, but when they break you better be ready to pay the piper, as they ain't cheap.
Stuff is gonna come back to Europe, it has to as for too long the delusion of Asia making everything is going to rudely awake quite a few people.

IMHO I hate it, I would never sell mine to get one, no matter how much better it is, but that's my opinion  :D
