The 16" or even the 15" wheel means that the sidewall height is greater.
This allows for flex in the tyre and a degree of absorption of deflection from rough farm tracks etc and thus aids in the suspension of the vehicle.
However it gives a softer and slightly floaty feel on the road.
Larger wheels with Low profile tyres have a small sidewall which is stiffer because it barely deflects. This stiffness keeps the tread more in line with the rim and thus a greater feeling of "roadholding"
.. but the trade off is a limited ability on rougher surfaces, a harsher and noisier ride plus the potential for damaging the rim when mounting the kerb outside the hairdressers.
