Just been driving at 57 mph in a 300 tdi disco, hit a small divet in the road and the front wheels started to vibrate violently for about 3 secs and it was almost uncontrolable. What do you think is the problem apart from the goverment being too tight to fix the roads?! Steering damper?

A slight reaction is not uncommon, but I guess this is something new to your car otherwise you wouldn't have asked. Given that it settled down after a few seconds, I would look for worn steering damper or front shocks.

I had this on my last Rangie. Replaced front bushes, steering ball joints and steering damper, that cured it although I'm not sure which it was - they were all shot I think.
