All of what has been said before would point to why they came off, but there is another reason which has not been mentioned.

The wheel itself acts like a giant spring washer, if you look at the contact surface of the wheel you will see that from there the nut goes to the contact area it can be pulled in the way. So along with a slight stretch on the stud pulling it in, the spring in the wheel etc you end up with it holding everything on very well.

If you horse it like you did you can damage threads, damage studs (if you stretch them to far they yield and will not spring back – like a spring) and flatten the wheel against the hub and it too will yield and will not spring back, you have then lost the spring washer property of the wheel.

So a few things to check here before you drive off with them again.

Torque is good, more is NOT better.

the studs didnt have any visible damage to them when putting my wheels back on, so do ya reckon i should still replace them?

That just gets me nagged.

My usual answer is 'when pigs fly':p

I'm now worried cos I hear 'swine flu':eek::doh:

That aint true.

I have found that by rigging my air compressor up to a 6ft wide sewer pipe I can turn my size to my advantage. I can make myself in to a human cannon ball and use my slender waist to form a seal with said pipe, thus using the built up air pressure to propel me to my landrover in seconds.:p

I am just working on how to brake at the moment.
