My 300tdi auto has started to develop what seems like a mechanical whining/whirring noise under load. Sounds like it's coming from the gearbox area. Maybe.
Still drives perfect but really want to get it diagnosed and sorted before something gives up on it. :(

Check the diffs, for water firstly.

Then do the prop swap thing to eliminate.

Very easy to confuse diffs for transmission! :)

It really is only under acceleration, be it partial or full.

Water contamination in front diff is a strong possibility actually, as it didn't look too clever when I checked the level in it the other day, so will drain it out tomorrow and see how I get on after that.

Really hope it is diff related as that'll be a doddle. :)

I was working along the lines of pitted CWP, only because it happened to me and thought it was gearbox but no.

Worth checking before diving in the deep end anyway!!

on plus side , exelent time to sort out crap land electrics :)

"to do" list now in the hands of the insurance company!
my new list: look for a replacement landy, that has the following electric circuits : Starting, Charging, Ignition, Lighting, Wipers & Horn... = Defender! stuff the wifes comfort!

Well, having drained the diff oil I think I've found the problem...
What came out was what can only be described as an oily grey sea of swarf, so I'd say the diff was well on the way to eating itself.
Question is; what on earth would cause something like that?!

On the plus side, I've now decided that I may as well whip the front axle out to give it a full refurb, as it was on the 'to do' list this year anyway. :)

Oh well, good-a-time as any to strip it all down, change the seals and fit the extended breathers then.
