200 and 300 are the best of the bunch, mechanical injection pump, Turbo Diesels - there is not a lot of difference between the 200 and 300 really, easier to work on the 200, 200 gets bragging rights. The 300tdi was a bit more refined version; it saw the introduction of a serpentine belt, EGR things like that.

TD5 was the sad replacement attempt for the 300tdi, 5 pot TD with electrics, more electrics then some more on top for the sheer hell of it I think. It goes quite well and does the job but it’s got a lot more to go wrong on it, and needs a laptop to fix some of them.

Thats a bit like saying a Morris minor is better that a Ford Fiesta !!!

The TD5 is nothing less than SUPERB . . . pulls like a train and if serviced properly (which you should do to the 200 and 300's) it will easily clock well over 250k miles . . . .

You have probably just put a curse on your td5.. its got more sensors on than the appollo 11 space shuttle.... he who laffs last throws the first stone at 2 birds in the hand in a glass house.... or summat like that..

TD5s are good while theyre running and total crap when theyre not cos you need a big diagnostic machine to tell you its fooked!
**** what am i doing int disco bit:eek:

Whats best depends on what you want from a discovery, a newer one ie td5 will drive smoother on the road and the engine is more refined but yes it does have lots more to potentially go wrong and if it owes a lot of dosh you may be less inclined to go off road in it. The 200 and 300 are the older models and on the road drive a bit more like a jelly mould (this is probably only due to larger profile tyres as the chassis and suspension parts are not hugely different) but the engines are far easier to fix, parts for the engines are readily available and the wheel/tyre combo is more suited to off road than a td5. As far as bodywork go's they will all eventually rot, its an age thing. 200 and 300 will be cheaper to buy but may need welding done as they do rot(as will a td5 when they get a bit older).
Your best bet is consider what you want one for, if its for playing off road then do you want to risk rolling a 10k td5?? go drive a few of all types and see what suits your needs.

The suspension set up is very different, the TD5 has a better rear axle transverse location, so the back end won't 'wag' . . . this makes a big difference to on and off road performance. Also a lot of the series 2 TD5's have rear air suspension, there is much debate over this, but I find it good, especially if you carry heavy loads or tow a caravan etc, and off road it allows the rear end to be raised to give more clearance.

The TD5's are no more difficult to overhaul than a 200/300 . . you still need to be a competent 'home' mechanic ;)

The wheel/tyres have no bearing on which model you opt for, 100% off road equals proper off road tyres, 100% tarmac likelwise. I run on a set of BF AT's which I find well suited for both, unless I'm going serious jungle mud stuff, then I'd opt for Goodyear MTF's (as used by LR on the G4 challenge)

I regualary off road my £10k Disco TD5, I also follow the code of 'tread softly' and don't tear around like a pratt, that way I'm unlikely to roll it

Call me a nerd but the Apollo 11 mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. It was the fifth human space flight of the Apollo program, Launched on July 16th 1969, it carried Commander Niel Armstrong, Command Mohttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_16dule Pilot Micheal Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin (buzz) Aldrin. On July 20th, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon, while Collins orbited above. And in actual fact the ecu on a disco is probably 100 times more powerful than the navigation computer in the space craft.

The first mission of the space transport system (STS-1) or Space Shuttle, flew on April 12, 1981, ending a long hiatus in American space flight. The last Apollo lunar mission flew in December 1972!:D

Star trek rocks! ;)

Bollix everyone knows the moonlanding was shot on a filmset in Hollywood. the moon is as virginal as HB's wrong un.

You may me right! after all Tom Hanks was on Apollo 13 and he went on to a very successful acting and directing career! there must be a link!
